Collection advice, If you were to keep 2 English Mausers
      #316604 - 20/05/18 11:50 PM

Gentlemen,

I am moving a few things around the collection and need some help deciding what to keep. The English shotguns and super magnum paradox are going to stay in the collection, but I have a friend who wants some of my rifles and he is starting out his collection and has asked me too sell a few to him.

I have decided to keep two of the following, (I already decided to move on from a model A)...A factory Daniel Fraser with H&H mounts, Rigby .275 with H&H mounts, .375 H&H super deluxe with tons of factory extras, and a jeffery .333 takedown?

As you can see I am in a pickle but would like to hear your opinions. Thank you. (I hunt with all of them so I am planning on keeping one with optics)

Hi Gundog,

Very easy to me: Keep the .275 Rigby and the .375 H&H!!!!!! Both great rifles and better cartridges!!!!

Good luck!

Sounds like a great problem!

I'd like to see photos before I weigh in on the conversation.

Is that three or four? What is the calibre of the Fraser?

I second the need for photos.
(if you have trouble loading photos up, someone may be able to help. Also send them to me Nitro AT NitroExpress.com, but I may not get to them for several weeks)

As for deciding, I can't. I would keep them all ...

But realistically, it would depend on which ones you would first reach for and most often to use hunting. I am not into collecting just for collectings sake. Perhaps the .275 Rigby (with mounts) would be the most often reached for?

Keep the Fraser and the Jeffery.

The other two, although they sound like high end bolt guns, are a good choice for the beginner collector as ammunition for them is everywhere. Of course may be for the Fraser too.

Rigby and H&H are names that almost every sportsman recognizes so there is that aspect of familiarity for the new collector.
There's nothing worse than attempting a conversation with a self identified gun nut about Frasers, Jefferys, and others while their eyes gloss over and you may as well be speaking a foreign language.

Sorry the Fraser is in .360 NE. I can never post photos on this sight, but would be happy to send them.

Gundog, perhaps you could ID the firearms, I have provided numbers from 1 to 22 accompanying the photos. I could guess which were which, but better if you ID the photos.

The rifles in descending order are as follows:

1st is a .360 NE Daniel Fraser Takedown, retailed by H&H with their address and name on the barrel with H&H mounts installed at the factory. I have the uppers too, not pictured. (its so unique II will probably keep that unless offers me a Rigby, Westley or H&H with mounts from this forum )

2nd is a .275 Rigby with H&H mounts

Below that are more pictures of the H&H retailed Daniel Fraser.

3rd Rifle is an H&H .375 Super Deluxe with lots of extra factory engraving and special order island express sights. Such a terrific rifle. I will have to get Nitro the other rifles in my collection when I get a chance.

Hi Gundog,

Of course, the best is to keep them all! But, being more common or not, the Rigby and the .375 H&H are, still, my favorites!!!! Great pair!!!!

Gundog, I couldn't possibly part with any of them, beautiful rifles all of them. I don't envy your task ahead.

Gundog,

Looking at the Fraser´s trigger, it seems to be another than the original military 1893 one. Do you know what is it? Thank you!

Its a unique trigger custom made by Fraser. Its quite a piece of engineering. It also has a type of 2-stage safety that prevent the rifle from going off in the event that the rifle is dropped and the cocking piece slips the initial trigger set.

That 375 H&H is a piece of art and close to the perfect rifle for me, I would just want a magnum action on there.

Nice collection

Which do you shoot best and sing to you?

The 275 Rigby and 375 H&H are the obvious ones to keep as they are probably the ones that work best in the field on paper. But it comes down to individual preference - which fit the best and shoot best for you - those are the ones to keep.

The ones that look pretty, but you never use - they are the ones to pass on.

My view is that Rifles and Shotguns should be used and not safe queens. Using means careful use and not abusing. A rifle or shotgun is a precision instrument not a walking or climbing stick.

Quite frankly, I don’t know how you’re going to choose! They’re absolutely beautiful examples! I’d be heartbroken to let any of them go.

All lovely but I'd keep the Fraser and the Holland .375 if it were me.
