Are you joking? There has beed a huge revival in the 45/70 thanks to the marlin lever action rifle and ruger #1. It's great for any big game save the dangerous ones. Although the marlin lever action is a favorite guide gun in alaska with appropriate ammo. The 45/70 is America's cartridge full of history and romance. It's the oldest cartridge in continuos production an is a fine way to get into Big Bore shooting.

Its reported to be a fine big bore close action cartridge for medium sized game.

If you start talking about it being ideal for dangerous game, I am going to make a hex sign at you though. Most guys here will know what I mean.

In a lever action it makes a great handling brush rifle.

In one of these new Baikal / Remington low priced doubles it will introduce a whole generation of shooters to doubles and hopefully with positive experiences!

I've owned and hunted with .45-70s for years mainly in Remington Rolling Block replicas, a Sharps carbine replica, a Ruger #1S and a Marlin Guide Gun. Great! for close range deer hunting... the Marlin Guide Gun was really nice for jump hunting whitetails in thick brush. It was equipped with Ghost Ring sights and very fast on target out to 100 yards. I thought when I was plains game hunting in the bush in South Africa that the Marlin Guide Gun would have been perfect. But, I've enjoyed just as good a performance from plain old 8mm Mausers with cheaper ammunition. One 8mm Husqvarna I have with an 18 1/2" barrel and a low powered scope is every bit the equal of the Guide Gun just not quite as fast on follow up shots. My 9.3X62 Mauser way out performs the .45-70 in a wider variety of situations so I believe it was the lever action Marlin and not the round that was the real advantage. Hence, I sold the .45-70s in favor of the Mausers.

DoubleD

You know in those endless debates I always said the .45/70 was capable of killing DG but far from ideal.

A client shot a cape buffalo with one and a guide gun plus tested one for penetration on a elephant skull when I was in the Matetsi in 2002. It does the job. BUT even this guy knew it was far from ideal and had a lot of other big bores to choose from. He was also very experienced and not a new-chum the first time on safari.

I think these Baikal double .45/70's will lead to a whole lot of guys planning to take one on safari. Which probably is not ideal.

I used to own two 45/70 Marlins, but I matured and grew out of them. Neither of them fed so hot - the bullet noses would scrape a little on the edge of the chamber. Maybe the feeding has improved, as the Marlins I owned were made 25 years ago. Also, the triggers were awful, and the stock design accentuates recoil. I would much rather shoot a box of 470 NE shells in a double than a box of 45-70 in a Marlin.

IMO

Dude, was that with factory 405 gr JSP's going out at 1300 f/s or some hoary loads similar to the ol' Elmer Keith load of 405 gr Speer at 52 gr 3031? I learned to habitue myself to recoil using an old Marlin w/22" barrel back when they first came back out in one. After shooting that and the No.1's, the 375 and 458 didn't seem so bad after all.

I was at the range today shooting one of my rifles and this gunsmith was there with this double rifle this guy had put together out of a shotgun in 45/70. He showed it to me and said the action was strong enought and that he had put inserts in the barrels that were made to do this. He hopes he can get it to shoot to 100 yds. I said good luck.

303,

Yes, the 45-70 is a great cartridge out to 150yds (where most hunting is done anyway) and it hits like a freight train. I have hunted with a Marlin lever action scoped with a Leupold 1-4 x 20 and it did everything emphatically. However, I'll second '500grains' thoughts on the trigger. It does need a little work that any competent gunsmith can carry out. Also, I stuck on an inch thick recoil pad not only to soften recoil but also to lengthen the pull as well. What I like best about Marlin is that you can clean the barrel from the breech end very easily.

I don't believe that is correct. I believe the .22 rimfire has that claim.

While I think that a .45-70 is probably acceptable for North American game I wouldn't trust it at all for Cape buffalo or other dangerous game in Africa or Asia. Even the hot loads don't appeal to me. As far as the Baikal revised Remington double barrels are concerned I don't believe the quality will be there for a dangerous game rifle. It will be a nice deer rifle but few deer charge. The .45-70 is a great round with worlds of potential... in its place. I just don't believe that you want to cheap-skate a dangerous game hunt and a few bucks saved trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear could come back and get you.

303,

Whether you're in the US or in Australia, Remington/Spartan are about to launch the Baikal SxS doubles in this caliber at a very low price. Just buy one and try it out. I doubt that there is any better way to find out.

Several members on this forum have decided to buy one in case you would not like to experiment and wait for an opinion. I am sure that you would hear about it as soon as the guns are launched.

Good hunting!

Look, as a deer rifle, stocking and quick shooting in thick brush its a great gun and cartridge. The later models of the 1895 Marlin guide gun are super. I love mine. But as an African cartridge its just not enough, so keep it with what it was designed for and you'll be fine. It's also very light and fun to carry.

One question I have...if getting a .45-70 lever action...why buy a Marlin when you can get an 1886 Winchester?

Richard.

Well, I think the Marlin is a better gun. Plus it's a lot more scope friendly if you chose to use one.

Right-on, Richard- why indeed.
: The Marlin maybe better for as scope, but a .45-70 doesn't need one for hunting it's hitable range.
: Out to 300yds. the factory irons of an '86, if slightly modified to a shallow "V" rear sight, will do just fine for all hunting.
: The Winchester beats the pants off the Marlin from the nastalgia or esthetics department. the Marlin it too far removed from it's roots to have the same type of "feel".

It really is a great hard hitting round. I am going on a bear and cougar hunt in New Mexico on Thursday and I will definitely be bringing my marlin lever action 45-70. I'll let you know how it does. Should give 'em a good thump.

Daryl_S

In your opinion,
1. Would you honestly shoot at an animal with an open sighted 86 in 45/70
at 300 yards ?

2. Have you ever done it ?

3. If so, do you honestly think an animal would drop to the shot ?

We tested a 45/70 (I hink lever action Marlin) and a 458 Wing Mag (Win Mod 70)
at a 500 yard steel plate. It took my mate and I 7 shots each before we hit it and
the trajectory of both guns was a true Rainbow shape - we were watcing the projectiles
as they flew through the air.

Therefore I do not believe or think t should be perpetuated that a 45/70 is a 300 yard
gun, even with a scope.

TONY577
If ou have hunted Lion, what bullet, velocity, load were you using AND
do you honestly think a 45/70 would stop a CHARGING lion in it's
tracks at 5, 10, 20ft from you if slightly off centre - ie misses the brain
/ spine so I suppose the qustion is, Does it in your opinion have enough
shock to have some affect.

I have to agree with 500. From my experience the 45-70 has a couple feet of drop at 300 and 4-6 feet of drop at 400. I have never tried anything past that but I think the results at 300 and 400 speak for themselves. I prefer the Marlin as an open sights rifle for less then 200 yards and it performs very well.

I was at a gun show a few years back and there was this guy that was showing this double 45/70. That rifle was looking good so I asked the price for a friend of mine and the price was over 30,000 thousand dollars. Well we left without it. But it was really a nice looking rifle. The guy said the barrels needed to be sighted in.

Sorry this is so late coming-
: Yes- I have shot game, a single moose at 320yds with a .45-70, cast 550gr. bullet at1,670fps from an Italian actioned, custom barreled rifle. My sights were express sights, and the shot/hit were easy. The moose, a large dry cow, staggered 20 yds before dropping.
: I know there are very few hunters out there today, who've the accuracy and experience needed to shoot big game at 300yds with a scoped modern rifle, let alone a large bore with heavy bullets and it's attendent trajectory. There are many hunters out there who cannot hit a deer or moose at 100yd offhand, yet is the round they use only a 50 yds ctg. because of that fact?
: Many people think today as in one aiming point, holding over, etc. I don't. Even with my scoped rifles, I use Mil Dots, or plex posts for range estimations (or a lazer range finder) and know the impacts they give at various ranges. I've been in this game a while & as old Elmer said, "Hitting at long range is accidental, but if you practise at long range, you'll have more long range accidents than the guy who doesn't".
: Just because I said the rifle was a 300yds round, doens't mean everyone is able to shoot game at that range. I know I am, so for me, it's a 300yd round. I've a number of friends who also are capable of this type of shooting. We practise. For many people, it's a 100yd round. I know one like that as well, but then, for him, his .300 Wheatherby only a 100 yd round.
: Perhaps this is what I should have posted above.
: Properly loaded, the round has the power, but there is no substitute for practise.
