Re: Additional information on Gustav Genschow/Kaba SN 905 [Re: lancaster]

Gentlemen,
and especially Lancaster,

I am sorry to report that my aquired rifle (S/N 905) from M. Lietzau is NOT in 10,75x57 caliber but in 10,75x68.

I found this out after having fired the first shot (modified case in 10,75x57) in this rifle:
the case looked rather strange afterwards!

To make a long story short, the chamber cast proved that the chamber is a (another) 10,75x68.

The previous owner said upon request that he has bought the rifle in caliber 10,75 and thought that it was a x57 because the extractor claw of the standard head size 8x57 fitted.
As it came out, the extractor was first missing and the pre-owner had only an original 8x57 extractor on stock, so the wrong one was assembled and gave the impression that the rifle must be a 10,75x57.

So, I am still looking for a 10,75x57!
Any offers are welcome (seriously)!

best regards
Rolf

thats bad luck

what do you want to do with the rifle now? I suspect this rechambering was done in scandinavia once and now you have a rifle without proof? in any case the extractor have to be adapt for the 10,75x68 rim and the rifle need a new proof( what will be happen without problems I suspect)to hold it or sell it.
remeber this when I see a rifle for sale what will happen sooner or later

Hello lancaster,

I modified the extractor by myself and now it works!

I like the 10,75x68 so I do not intend to sell it (I gave another Mauser rifle in 10,75x68 to the Mauser Museum in Oberndorf because they had none, and I regarded this as a shame...)

But I do not know whether I shall keep this rifle it in the current condition (which is not a "collectible" one with the altered stock and extractor claw), or whether I shall modify it like mounting a scope, glass bedding the system, chopping the barrel to 58cm and use it for hunting?

Any ideas would be welcome!

best regards
Rolf

scope mount and class bedding is something I have done also with collectible rifles... ok, it was a period claw mount and glass bedding help an original but once splitted and repaired stock.
the octagonal to round barrel is best Suhl craftsmanship, I would not cut a mm of it.

this 10,75x68 http://gallery.bestguns.de/main.php?g2_itemId=3306 with a strong taste from being for decades in sweden looks like it comes from the maker of the Geco/Kaba rifles

You fellows are a bad influence on me. I ended up buying this rifle today. I did talk them down. A lot. Now to find dies. I'll probably order from CH4D unless one of you has a set sitting around collecting dust.

yes, we are the bad one you were warned before

I think you better dont wait to find a second hand die set.
just send ch4d a mail and order it there it works fine. best basic brass is 3006 and for having enough bullets I recommand a .424 bullet sizing die to press the 300 grains .429 down.

I'll slug the bore when I get home from the slope in two weeks. I have an LBT mold for a beautiful 44 caliber 300 grain WLNGC bullet that ought to work well. I'll order a Lee push through sizer after I slug the bore. I've got lots of 06 brass and I'll order some Hawk and Woodleigh bullets and may look at a mold for a 350 grain bullet.

Hello mart,

an US-gentlemen of the NE-forum sent me a set of two bullet diameter down-sizing dies from Lee.

Now I am practising with my 10,75x68 with cheap Sierra .44 Magnum 300grs SPFN bullets
(downsized from .430" to .423") with satisfactory precision upto 100m distance.

I can recommend these for practising, but the bullet velocity should be limited to max. 1500 fps.

best regards
Rolf

Rolf,

That's a good bullet. I do have plenty of the 300 grain cast bullets and will shoot them. I also have over a ton of lead for casting so won't run out of bullet material any time soon. The Lee sizer dies work well to resize cast bullets also. I use them to make bullets for my 401 Powermag from 41 mag cast bullets. This will be a fun project.

Mart
