Got my Mauser today and I am pretty pleased with it.
The metal is very good condition with most of its original finish.
The stock has a few dings and dents here and there but all in all a very honest example with a great looking bore.

Very nice and most of those dings would come out with steaming if you have a mind to refurbish the stock. Hard to beat the Type A Mausers for the understated elegance of a workhorse rifle.
You may not want to make any mods to your Type A but I put a Timney Sportsman M98 trigger on mine to give a better trigger for everyday use.

It is interesting to note the difference between this rifle and my TypeAs in 30’06 and 10.75x 68.
This one balances very much the same as the other two but the forend is very slim in the hand especially in the forend.
These three are a good lesson on how Mauser tailored each type of chambering upon a shared platform.

I actually bought this rifle with the intent of selling but now I’m not so sure...

Very nice rifle indeed. That is one of the most enjoyable features if owning and using older Mauser and Mannlicher rifles is that they have stocks of the appropriate size for the cartridge. The slim fore end and grip always appeal to me much more than the the thick bulbous stocks of today. Super nice rifle, I wouldn't be selling anything, well done.

That is a sweet rifle! Page 270 of Speed’s Commercial Oberndorf Mauser book says that Mauser mostly offered 6.5x58 in Type A’s, but also in some type B’s. I ran across an original Type S carbine in 6.5x58 at the Cabella’s in Sydney about 12 years ago. It was cool, but factory brass and ammo is nonexistent. They called it the “pencil Mauser”, in Southern Africa, due to how far the 160 grain bullet sticks out of the case. I’m Jealous!!!

I did a net search and found that Buffalo Arms sells 6.5x58 Portuguese cases that have been reformed from other brass. Price seems very reasonable.

I know it can be formed from 30’06 brass so if I decide to shoot it, all I will need is a set of dies and maybe neck trim in or out.
Maybe start with factory 25’06 or even 270 Win. brass would be better.

Inside reaming or outside turning may be necessary if using '06-type cases and may end up with a do-nut inside where the old shoulder/neck junction is.

Here's a reply on another forum about this round from a fellow with one or more of them.

:I ordered a 100 case lot of 7x57mm brass to use with my M1904s. Rather than purchase expensive reloading dies, I bought a set of used 6.5x55mm Swedish dies at a gun show and use the FL die to neck size my cases. You can size the necks directly to 6.5 without any issues and without any intermediate steps.

I leave a very small artificial shoulder at the base of the neck of the 7x57mm brass for the very first firing. It requires a tiny bit of extra effort to close the bolt. The mini shoulder holds the cartridge head snug up against the bolt face for the first firing, which ensures that there is the absolute minimal stretching of the case during firing. This helps prolong case life along with periodic annealing. I use light loads in all of the WWI vintage rifles from the Collection that I shoot since I only use them to punch paper.

Both of my Vergueiros are extremely accurate and the 6.5x58mm would be an excellent cartridge for deer or wild pigs."

Good point Daryl.
My guess is that in necking and fire forming a 7x57 will stretch it out to the 58mm length chamber and avoid any inside or outside trimming and... I have some 7x57 brass I can use already.
Should be easier than I was originally thinking.

Thought the acquisition of this rifle was as good a reason as any to bring out my other Type As for a bit of a comparison. (as if I needed a reason to get them out)

It is very interesting to take note of the subtle differences between the rifles especially in the stocking.
Even the leaves of the rear sight are different from one another.
One would think that could be in regard to the different chambering of each but it could be that and the differing contours of the barrels.
I will post pictures of this later.

Love these These model A's.

The 6,5x58p cases could be made with 8x60 cases and a minimum of trimning..
