Cartridge 300 for mountain goat or female roe deer.
      #312643 - 19/02/18 07:50 AM

Hello, for the next season I would like to go hunting or a female mountain goat or a female roe deer. The issue is that the rifle that I have with the smallest cartridge is a 300 Win Mag and I would like to know what bullet to use so as not to make a very big damage to the animal. Thank you.

Any bullet will do a lot of damage to a roe deer. Don't know how heavy a female mountain goat is.

They are a very hard bullet..so will probably give you less damage than say a accubond, partition or similar bullets..

Having said that, a 300W is a lot of caliber for such a small animal IMHO...so no guarantee's..

I am aware that it is a lot of cartridge for such light animals but it is what I have.

You could also load it was down.

Cutting edge makes a 190gr flat nosed solid that might work.

Plenty of Roe are shot in the UK with 150 gn 308 bullets. If you are shooting 300 win mag I would up to 180gns and go for an interlock or bonded type bullet and not get too close. I have seen the results of 165gn SST 30-06 superformance ammo on Roe does. No need to gralloch - already done for you.

Like Ripp, I would also suggest a bullet like Barnes TSX, or TTSX. Other makes - Norma E-Tip seems to me, as well as the Hornady GMX.

I would not use a cup and core bullet nor one of the bonded bullets which also have soft cores.

A 220gr. RN slowed to 2,700fps might also do well.

As to factory loads, Barnes TSX and TTSX are available in factory ammo - also, GMX and quite likely the Norma bonded bullet as well.

With these bullets, a good back-stop is necessary as all of them will exit from about any angle. Another roe deer might stop it, or likely not.

In theory a .300 Magnum could be handloaded down to a slower velocity perhaps with filler to reduce meat damage on smaller animals such as roe.

If all I had was a .300 Mag for game such as roe, this is what I would do.

I believe it was Remington that at one time was doing such a thing for various calibers..reducing loads to make it basically equivalent to a 30-06 in terms of energy and recoil..
