wine is nice...does anyone prefer BEER!!!
      #31315 - 17/05/05 03:46 PM

I understand that some people may like wine but wine is not Newcastle Brown Ale...wine is also not that really good Tasmanian beer I had in Melbourne (no I don't remember the name of it)...

Anyone else here prefer beer?

Richard.

I think it's a lot about the occasion. After a full day in the African heat I don't open a nice red wine and cool off but rather a Castle Lager that has been in the ice chest for some hours (I wish I was there now), the wine then I really like to have when eating some nice meat at the evening.

Also liked the Zimas and Coronas sitting in a hot tub in California after the SCI show in January (would like to be there to....)

I'd take beer any day during any occasion before wine. I like the IPA's, ESB's, Stouts, Porters with food or lagers for cooling down. Shoot, I'd rather have a pilsner than wine...

Wine. A terrible thing to do to a grape.

Wine and beer are complementary and competing products.

A boutique family owned brewery in Adelaide named "Coopers" runs a very successful ad campaign in wine magazines with the slogan - "The Beer drunk by winemakers". A lot of winemakers enjoy a sparkling ale during a hard days work. It is a favourite of South Australians.

Many winemakers enjoy a beer as a pre-dinner drink. It is "wetter" and quenches the thirst better due to the lower alcohol content.

A chilled beer is lovely on a very hot day.

TheTasmanian beer was probably "Boags" which is very good. I also like the Kiwi beer "Steinlager".

I like wine, beer, and spirits. Why limit yourself?

Lastly one of the biggest beer brands in Australia has the same brand name as my last name.

DPhillips,

We need to get John to Anchorage or Homer; Moose's Tooth Brewery and Restaurant and Homer Brewing Company. Polar Ale or Red Knot Ale among others at these fine establishments would have John plowing those grapes under and starting to plant barley and hops Downunder. I personally believe that our gracious host, as classy as he may be, is truly a closet home brewer.

John, one of our founding fathers once stated that, "Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Most Alaskans agree!

The 'Tooth does have some fine beer. Pizza is tasty too!

I can't remember the ESB that the 'Tooth had a few years ago, but it was dangerously good. The Fairweather IPA is my favorite now.

Next time you are planning to stop by Anchor Town, I'll see if we can arrange to bend elbows over there. I'll buy the first pitcher anyway!

My brother-in-law makes a very fine home brew. Actually he makes probably a couple dozen different flavours and recipes and has won prizes for home brews at local shows. The last one 5 out of 6 of the prizes.

Also there is a boutique brewery opening in the Barossa Valley. We have probably 60 wineries in the Barossa and it is smart business to open a local brewery.

The industry is dominated by one or two very large international breweries, Fosters which also owns the winemaker, Beringer Blass, and Lion Nathan, which makes the "Hahn" label and also owns a number of fine wine winemakers.

The regulations for opening a brewery are far harder than opening a boutique winery which is unfortunate.

Good to see a local ale coming out soon!

Joe,
We'll see you there. Drop me a note a few days ahead of time.

John, we need to get you up here, I'll buy the first pitcher then also.

James Boag was the Tasmanian one...also I tried one from the Cooper brewery while overloading on sausage in Hahndorf, that one was fantastic.

Mickey,

After a dozen I spell Hahn as "XXXX". It then reads the same.

Otherwise "XXXX" is how Queenslanders spell it. They find spelling of single sylable names quite challenging.

(PS only joking!)
