Almost leaving
      #31299 - 17/05/05 02:30 PM

Saturday morning I'm leaving for Namibia. I got 1600 km to travel to Stampriet where we will be hunting. This will be my first hunt out of RSA. We will be hunting Gemsbok and Springbok for meat. We were also invited to help with the culling of 500 Springbok.

I don't know how I am going to past the time, all my bags are packed and I'm ready to leave. Makes me think of a song "Leaving on a jet plane". I still have a hundreds rounds to load but then boredom will set in till Saturday morning.

I will take my 375H&H, 308WM and the 22-250 for the culling part of the trip.

Jaco is going to be singing ....

"There is 500 Springboks left on the plain. If one should fall over there wll be 499 Springboks left on the plains.
There are 499 Springboks left on the plain. If one should fall over there wll be 498 Springboks left on the plains.
........"

Have fun.

1600 kms is a nice long drive. I guess you will be bringing the meat back as biltong?

Ok

For once I am glad I am not there, because my singing sucks

But if someone could do the singing and I could concentrate on the shooting, maybe I can get on a plane tomorrow....

With the new movie coming out, I think he might be trying a Jedi method of locating game.

Christer

I'll have to grab myself on the ear and force myself in the vehicle on Saturday morning he..he..he....

John

I'll be damn busy if I sing that song up to 0. Thank heavens I'm a bad singer it will spare my voice and the ears of my fellow hunters.

On the other hand don't you want to come and sing for us, you will have to hurry up and get on that plane.

John,
I intend to bring back 500kg. meat. I will make biltong, boerewors and cut a couple of steaks. I ussually cut up Springbok the same as mutton. Nothing better than a roasted leg of Springbok or a Gemsbok fillet.

Has anyone hunted with the Viking before let me tell you leave any sleep time at home. I was having a bit of relaxation closing my eyes for a while.

How is the saying when in Africa do as africans well CCHunter you should be thinking of it next time when you are here but I understand now what happnes when you live in a country that as almost no night time in summer with 24 hour daylight. It was very nice to have more than 16 hours daylight when I was there as most of our sightseeing was done from 6pm onwards

I've been out to the shooting range for the last time today, to test new loads in my 22-250. Got a 11mm group at 100m with Hornady V-max. I'm very happy with that, should do its bit on the culling part of the hunt.

I will most probably join Johann my partner tommorow to test his 270. Having nothing else to do I will have a go at some targets with my 375 and 308, both will also go along.

Wish the time will start flying now, it is crawling like a tortoise.

What grain weight is the vmax bullets that you are using?

I guess you will be taking brain shots on the cull, so to what distance do you shoot too? Or do you take lungs shots as well.

Springbok are fairly small so I would guess a .22/250 to the brain does a fair amount of damage. I shoot a few fallow deer for meat each year with a .22 Magnum with brain shots and it does well enough. Until one stag this year which dropped to a front on shot. I shot another and the first had his head back up. I do prefer a side shot with a .22. They do move their heads a lot so one must wait for the perfect opportunity. A .22/250 would mush the skull pretty well.

John
I'm using 55grains V-Max, they group the best in the 22-250.

Yes we must shoot head shots when culling. I also prefer a side shot , a little more area. We will be culling in the day and at night, so the distances will vary. During the day it should be between 150 and 200 m and at night it should not be more than 150m. Even a lung shot on Springbok works pretty well with the V-Max, it does not exit but mess up the lungs totally. If possible I will try to stick to the daytime, the evenings is made for the campfire and a couple pf Castle's

We are planning to hunt our own animals in the first two days and then start the culling job. Hopefully we will get one or two jackal as well.

This will be the first time that I hunt Springbok since 1974, when I left Kimberley and moved to Pretoria. I am pretty excited to about it. Springbok is of the nicest meat available.

We are also planning on sleeping one ore two night in the bush. The wifes and the children are staying at home on this trip, I'll take them out later in the season.

They feed on the young of the animals and feast on the domestic animals. They can become a pest in certain areas. You got to keep them under control. In certain areas there is even a bounty on jackal. Lynx can also become a pest in certain araes. The bigger the food source the more their numbers. Jackal are useful if their numbers are kept under control.

I'm only talking about Black backed jackal, the rest we leave in peace and won't even consider shooting them.

I'm keeping the skins of all the jackal. I need 44 to make a "karos", it is a blanket made out of skins. A jackall karos is beautiful and very warm. The problem is to get 44 skins that is not to badly damaged. Side on shots in the body ussually leaves the skin torn to pieces at the exit wound. I hope that the v-Max's wont exit. It will be the first time that I'm using them in the 22-250.

Why not shoot jackals? It's like shooting coyotes here stateside. If they're not thinned out on a regular basis, they'll multiply like rabbits as they seem to have two litters per year.

You need a .17 Remington or .17 Hornet for those jackal skins.

John,
I think you are right, but I haven't got one. With the shitty gun laws we have I cannot afford to waste a licence. I'm busy building a 416 Rigby.

One of the guys in the air rifle club shot a jackal with a high powered PCP and killed it. I will certainly never even think of trying to kill an jackal with a air rifle. It is like hunting a ele with a .22Lr. It can be done, but it is not the right thing to do.

I have less than 24 hours left before I leave. The excitement just keeps on growing. It does'nt matter how many times you went hunting the feeling stays the same everytime. Maybe it is an addiction.
