Does anybody here have experience forming 6.5X58 brass?
I've read it can be made from 8X57.

I would take 6,5x57 brass thats easily available but the common suspects 8x57, 7x64, 30 06 should work

going back to the roots
old sporter making from a M 71 Jaegerbüchse

its no thread about military rifles but this old Mauser is remarkable
a M 71 rifle that got a liner in 8x57I

can't remember seeing another M 71 in 8x57 before

I make mine from 30-06. Needs to be trimmed shorter after case forming

What were the Mausers used by von Lettow-Vorbeck's troops in German East Africa in WW1? Were they M71's or was there an M84(?) ?

What cartridge was used?

Thanks.

Very neat looking Mauser sporters. And no doubt a useful cartridge for medium game.

common rifle in east africa was the Jägerbüchse Mauser M 71 in 11,15x60R. the Jägerbüchse was 10 cm shorter than the infanterie rifle M 71 and not only made for the hunter units but also for other technical troops. prior to the massive losses of the great war this old blackpowder single shots were seen as worthless old iron.

this is the only pic I know were the askaris have the carbine 88, proably because its a machine gun troop so they use the same ammo like the machine gun

this artillery men got the shorter carbine M 71

Thanks very much lancaster. And for all the interesting photos.

I did guess you might already have posted something on it, but didn't look. I haven't seen any of these photos anyway though.

As for that old cartridge being ineffective the Askaris were effective against the British East Africa forces armed with .303's though.

At one time I hoped to find an example of each to hang on my wall. Now I would need my gun bunker/stong room to be built to be able to hang at least one of them on a wall. The old M71 might pass as an unfiring antique.

I wonder if that pith helmet has a workable leather strap on it? it might well have a real one. The one's I have, have a fake strap for show only. No good in a wind.

Here's a real one for $48.00 USD. Others can be found on the 'net as well, in various styles and with pith, cork, and other absorbent lightweight construction. When dipped in water (especially in a dry climate) they become evaporative cooling units.

Not too many years ago, these were hard to find on the 'net. Now there are many available.

Crafted from cork, the helmet has cooling properties thanks to its air vents and cotton covering.

Yes theose the ones made in Vietnam for a few bucks and where the straps are for show only and pretty artificial. The pith helmet itself isn't bad though.

The French design has the best shape in my opinion. Once was available in jungle camo. I wanted one like that.

The Indian for knobheads.

The best one was perforated though, not on the site at the moment. Similar to a German colonial pith helmet. I have one of those as well.

I have one of these as well as the (fake) gilt insignia suitable for a battle at Rourkes Drift.

Now I just need a proper Martini-Henry to go with it and also a nice Mauser M71 to go with the "German-like" helmet. Back on topic.

This is an interesting photo, as it shows a "Leichte Feldkanone C/73", 8 cm caliber. According to v.Lettow – Vorbeck's books, the German Schutztruppe had two of these outdated guns in 1914. Since about 1900 the two guns had decorated the lawn in front of the government house in Daressalam. The empty shells were planted around the edge of that lawn, while the impact fuses were found in a dark warehouse corner. Lacking any artillery except some light mountain guns, the 2 old cannons were cleaned up and pressed into service. The shells were unearthed, wound with copper wire guide rings and refilled with blackpowder . Both guns were used effectively in November 1914 to repel an abortive landing of about 8000 British – Indian troops near Tanga. The outcome of this landing allowed the Schutztruppe to expand and resupply, as the British forces left behind enough modern Lee –Enfields to equip more than 3 companies, 16 machine guns, 600 000 cartridges and sundry other equipment. The Schutztruppe could field only about 1000 men against the numericallly superior empire forces, most of them freshly recruited Askaris.
In 1914 the peacetime Schutztruppe had 14 companies, 216 Europeans and 2540 Askaris. Three companies were just rearmed with new M98a Mauser carbines, while the rest still had the old blackpowder, single shot M71. Four new companies, numbers 15 to 18, were formed just after war was declared August 1914. Many Germans then living in East Africa entered service again. So the maximum force during the war numbered about 3000 Europeans and 11 000 native Askaris. During the war two blockade runners, "Rubens" 1915 and "Marie" 1916, brought in supplies, among them 3500 8mm rifles and carbines, two 6cm Marine landing guns and a total of 8 more machine guns.
This photo apparently shows one of those old 6cm landing guns and one of the Maxim MG 08 on naval landing carriage, together with M88 carbines, brought in by the "Rubens".
