Something black and monstrous :)
      #312316 - 13/02/18 03:32 PM

Some time ago I talked about a custom M98 rifle project. When I put up photos of the action I have it was suggested it was too pitted to be worthwhile.

So now I am wondering, how about an ugly BLACK rifle using that action instead?

The stepped barrel is already .30-06, so the calibre choice is fine.

https://promagindustries.com/

Archangle makes these "tactical" stocks for the Mauser K98 in 8x57. Claims they will fit some other Mauser actions. Mine is a Colombian FN Mauser.
I will email them to ask if it will fit.

These stocks also come with a ten shot magazine. Somehow the stock feeds the magazine into the mauser action (?).

Just a project, quite cheap, as a bit of a plaything and to make use of the barrelled action.
Add a new Timney trigger, a bipod, and do something about getting a scope on it.

What do you think? Should I give up classic rifles and join the tactical brigade?

G'Day Fella's,

Wow NitroX! and go for it (but confirm the magazine will accept .30-06 cartridges).

When I read the subject line, I was expecting to see something about Borat O'Bongo...... LOL!

Yes Fella's, at the moment, we are still allowed to have rifles with 10 shot magazines.
Don't tell any of the UN STOOGES but I have Lever Action rifles, that have even larger mag capacity than that......

Have to admit to not finding those rifles ugly any more and they can be pretty sweet to shoot. I would go the desert tan though.

I like the idea.

Rather like the 'rat rod' concept of hot rodding.

If you've got a really rough pile of nineteen thirty something remnants about and a 'project' engine, use a good frame and build something fun and dirty out of it.

The clip looks long enough to tape two together for more sustained fire power.

Originally I was looking for such a stock for my Mauser 96 in 6.5x55. But Arcangel don't make them for the M96.

Any tips on makers who might? Thanks.

What do you think of this mounting system?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dkvSrrPY7M

https://www.badacetactical.com/products/...unt-kar98k-k98k

Quote:

NOTE: Works for Mauser Karabiner 98 kurz (carbine 98 short, often abbreviated as Kar98k, K98, or K98k).
Does NOT work for K98A or K98AZ (pre-Kar98k) or ANY other Mausers

Claims it does not work on other Mausers. I have noted this MIGHT be because of the straight bolt handle getting in the way on some actions. If the bolt handle is bent, it may not be a problem. Only way to find out would be to ask.

But do you think this mounting system is otherwise viable? And holds zero properly?

Also it would have to allow a scope to be mounted far enough back for proper eye relief?

But might save a few dollars on a not very valuable project. ie by not having to have the action tapped for proper mounts.

With a detachable magazine stock, loading through the ejection port is less of an issue.

G'Day Fella's,

Looks the goods to me NitroX.
I have an aversion to modifying quality and original military firearms, so this gets my tick of approval.

Hope that helps

I used a picatinny rail on all of my long range rifles..most have it with a 20MOA built into the rail to aid in long distance shooting ..600 and beyond...great set up..and easy to move the scope fore and aft for correct eye relief..

Had one similar on a model 96 & want another, but cannot find one. B-Square I think was the maker - needed a long eye relief scope for it as it stayed out on the rear sight platform and did not reach back.
They make suitable scope bases, but are not, I suspect, as tough as say a Leuy or Redfield base.

Got reply number 1 from the tooth pulling process many of these companies have for potential customer enquiries ...

Asked the question:

Q1 Will the Colombian Police Mauser 98 potentially an FN Mauser fit into the stocks?

YES.

Q2. Will .30-06 Cartridges feed through the magazine?

NO ANSWER.

Q3. Can you export to Australia? If not I can probably supply a USA address for sending.

WE CAN NOT EXPORT OUTSIDE OF THE USA.

I think when seeing it was outside of the USA, the lights turned off, the brain sqitched off ... and any additional thought to the answer for Q2 was forgotten. Maybe the answer is NO. ?

I have re-emailed the questions, asking them to answer them fully. Plus added a couple more ...

Q. Will the action feed .308 cartridges?

Q. Are there any future plans to make stocks for the Swedish Mauser M96?

CONMMENT: I can probably supply a USA address for you to send to. (ie HINT HINT, you might actually make a sale ... )

I hope the answerers brain isn't too taxed by all these multitudes of questions ...

Usually I number my questions, ie Q1, Q2, etc. I am amazed how so few of the "help desk" or customer enquiries staff never answer in the same manner ...

Got a second reply and the answer was far more personable and friendly with good and proper answers. See below in red.

Now does anyone know of any reason why someone in the USA could not post a piece of plastic, ie a synthetic firearm stock to outside of the USA? Any friend want to volunteer? Of course any costs reimbursed.

I don't think there are any issues at the Australian end???? The law has changed and changes all the time, does a plastic stock as a "firearm part" now need some sort of BS import permit? I can ring customs of course.

Looking to get one of these stocks for the old Colombian Mauser, and a new trigger. Alone those two things would be a huge improvement.

But one of these tactical stocks DOES need a big tactical scope. But something relatively cheap, for me. Save dollars for sensible projects. Oh yes, a bipod as well. Two to four spare magazines would also not go astray.

Quote:

Asked the question:

Q1 Will the Colombian Police Mauser 98 potentially an FN Mauser fit into the stocks?

YES.

Q2. Will .30-06 Cartridges feed through the magazine?

NO ANSWER. They have come back with a .30-06 will feed but the .308 may have difficulties.

Q3. Can you export to Australia? If not I can probably supply a USA address for sending.

WE CAN NOT EXPORT OUTSIDE OF THE USA. Can of course be shipped to a USA address.

I think when seeing it was outside of the USA, the lights turned off, the brain sqitched off ... and any additional thought to the answer for Q2 was forgotten. Maybe the answer is NO. ?

They may have plans to do these in the future. The Tech answerer himself, said he has two he would like to convert. I have been put on their mailing list for this.

NitroX, I have been using a Cabela's Covenant FFP 6-24x50mm scope on a .308 target bolt rifle from up close out past 1300 yards in various high desert weather conditions.
For instance today it's been cold and blowing snow.
From outside to inside where it's warm via woodstove, no fogging of the scope.
There's a great deal of adjustment range and the glass is super clear on objects far away.

Really nice and price is *cheap*
Lifetime warranty.

I can't say for sure on shipping items from US to you.
ITAR is what you need to look at. I don't know what difference there is between an FFL and someone who isn't an FFL for shipping - but again ITAR is the issue if there's an issue.

Cheers

WOW..would never have thought to look at a Cabela's..respect your opinion as I know you do a lot of long range stuff AND you turned me on to a really nice scope a couple years ago, albeit expensive (my wife is still pissed at you about that one ) ..

Will have to check this out..

John..
Let me know how this goes.. send me a PM..I'll play this game..if allowed..
