Voere in 8x68S
      #311701 - 05/02/18 06:06 AM

Hello, I had not written for a while. Today I escape for a while from my student obligations and I present my new rifle. A Voere StLf3 in 8x68S. Of course someone knows about him, he has used it and also his opinion about the cartridge will be appreciated. I have read that it is very close to 300 Weatherby but that the American surpasses trajectory and distance to German. What do you think?

The 8X68S is a very good cartridge. It might not be as fast as the 300Weatherby but it puts a bigger hole in what you are shooting at. For this reason I would compare it to the 8mm Remington Magnum. It is not as powerful or fast as the 8mm Rem but not far behind it and less recoil.

Very good choice of calibre in my opinion. Go and enjoy it.

8x68S is a great ctg. A very close friend of mine has one, his favourite hunting rifle ctg. since I met him in 1979.
It is also going to Africa with him this coming Aug./Sept.
He likes the 185gr. to 200gr. bullets for around here, specifically the yellow tipped 196gr. Norma for moose.
I think he has a bunch of 200 to 225gr. tested for the 'Dark Continent'.

I read that in the Voere this cartridge goes back a lot to the point that some users have sold it for not supporting the kick. I intend to use it in batters with RWS Dk since in shots at close range and high speed the Ks tends to disintegrate without penetrating because it is very soft. The weight 180 grains.

You have a good rifle there Ovny!
If you match the right projectile to the game and your conditions then you will bring home game.
The TIG & TUG projectiles will be probably more suited for boar if that is what you are after.

Thank you for your comment. I take your recommendation into account. The problem may be the availability in Spain of this ammunition and the price of it.

Ovny, Norma also offer the 8x68S with a 200grain Swift A-frame, which would be a super round at an affordable price.

Hi mate, the problem with these old Voere rifles is that with certain tips the gun does not feed well, it is more certain 8x68S cartridges with some tips do not fit in the cartridge store. Unfortunately I do not know which cartridges offer that problem. Thank you very much.

By the way in the armory where I bought the rifle I was told that the length of the barrel was 63 cms and today I have measured it with a ramrod introduced by the mouth of fire until I hit the bolt and after making a mark I measured the length of the end of the stick to the mark and it has given me 61.5 cms. Is the loss of speed of 8x68S a lot with that length of cannon? Should I worry about the loss of benefits? Thank you

Ovny

Congratulations on the choice of your Austrian rifle and ammunition as 8x68S is a great caliber. The main question is to know for which use it will be intended:
- 8x68S is not really a caliber for shooting bucket-loads of ammunition at the range; as you already noticed it, it kicks albeit reasonably.
- For hunting it's in my opinion too much gun for all European light game however it is an excellent caliber for long distance shooting at Spanish Ibex, big red stags and probably also brown bear in Central/Eastern Europe. As Waidmannsheil already mentioned it, it is also an excellent plains game caliber for Africa.

I personally own a Mauser 66S in 8x68S since the mid-70's but I have stopped using it for hunting as I find it too heavy (it's a magnum caliber) and I now privilege lighter calibers such as 6,5x57 and 7x64, which are more adapted to the kind of game I hunt.

From the pictures you posted your Voere looks to date back to the mid-70's or early 80's; you should not therefore experience too much feeding issues with spitzer bullets as one may experience with earlier production rifles. RWS offers you in Europe the best choice of loaded 8x68S, and Norma also offers some; hereafter is the link to Ruag (the company that owns RWS & Norma), where you will find the ammunition brochure available. http://www.ruag.fr/ammotec/munition/cartouches-pour-carabines/

Good luck with your Voere!

Best regards.

Louis

First of all thank you for your response. Surely the use that is the least appropriate. If I hunt the biggest will be in the modality called "monteria" where the shots will be at medium and short distance and mainly to Spanish boars that rarely exceed 100 kilos. That if bullied by dogs and full of adrenaline, these animals can withstand the impacts of large cartridges (for example 300 WM, 338 WM etc ...). That is why I am looking for a bullet that expands well without being excessively soft with the danger of superficial injuries when not penetrating. I thought of the RWS Dk.

Thank you very much

Ovny.
