Heres one from a few weeks ago
Hunted the local swamp as a training session for a up coming trip to NZ. Had done a few km's and saw a cat cross the game path I was on. Cut wide to open up the angle for a shot. But the cat made it to the thick stuff. Pushed forward and spotted it bounding thru the high grass. Let out. a couple of squeaks and it worked perfectly. The moggy pulled up and looked back at me at around 30m.

Off hand shot and absolutely flattened him. Styer had. bit of a look but wasn't really interested.

Ascents first game not what I was expecting.......

I procrastinated for a long time wether or not to purchase a Ascent. Price for 600gram saving just didn't seem to be worth an extra grand over a extreme weather. Also the calibre I wanted wasn't available.
New owners in the shop up here said it would take 10 days to get one in 270WSM. Gave me a good price !
Out of the box it is well made finish is good. Trigger was terrible and I've had that fixed at a crisp 2 1/2 lb. Muzzle break is horrific, but tames the recoil very well very mild to shoot. Ill leave it on for NZ.
Shoots well even with the heavy trigger. Settled on the barnes 130's for my thar load.
For a light weight hiking / mountain rifle that will cop some abuse it will suit my needs.
Ill see how it goes in a couple of weeks. Cheers Mick

Im kind of thinking about the new base " Hunter" model as a back of the truck/NZ type rifle. They are very inexpensive ( and basic).
Had a couple of Kimber select grades and couldnt get them to shoot very well....others, on the other hand say theirs shoot very well.
Ill give one a try.
Good luck on the Thar, lets us know how you go.

Good one Mick, nice to see a dead cat, disgusting creatures. Considering the rifles that you normally use I m amazed at the rifle that you have chosen. Still, if your happy and it does the job all the better. Is the finish on the stock a new type of London best finish ? Anyway, well done with the cat.

7lb total weight unloaded. Talley light weight two piece mounts leupold VXI 3.5 to 10 CDS.
Easy to carry.

Excellent Mick, I do the same around home and I can ensure you that feral cats are now scarce! Your's is really nice and looks exactly the same than wild cats (not feral ones, really wild ones) we can still find in some remote places of Western Europe and are - needless to say, fully protected. That's a nice looking mtn rig.. My wife has a lightweight model in .308..however not an ascent..
shoots incredibly well with Nosler factory loads.. 165gr Accubonds..

7lbs is as high as I go for a mtn rifle anymore...the good ones still shoot well and see absolutely no reason to carry a heavier rifle around the mtns all day when you dont have to..

Also, thx for killing the cat..as Lancaster stated, lost of birds will thank you for it

Good to see 264 and thanks for sharing.
I've stopped stalking Game animals, just so I could Deck a phuckin Cat!

FYI, a mate of mine thats a huntin guide in NZ (PC), has a 270WSM and really likes it (along with a .260 Rem, for smaller Big Game species).
I learnt a long time ago 264, if all the bills are paid and there's food in the pantry, etc...... the worse thing you can say in life is, "Gee I Wish....."!

As Iowa_303 has stated, please keep us posted on your NZ trip, and Best Wishes for it.

By all means, the NZ trip with lots of pictures.

I once put a .45 calibre round ball through both shoulders of a large feral tom-cat. He was almost the size of a bob-cat, but not quite. The round ball anchored him and when I walked up to him, he lifted his head and hiss/spit at me. LOL - the next ball went through the side of his melon - that settled that account.
Cats are tough, even little ones.
