Thinking about getting a Classic Model 54 in .257 Roberts. Anybody have any experience with these? Most everything I’ve read has been very positive. They look like a nice fit between off the shelf production and custom. 1/2 moa guarantee for life for first buyer. Think it would be a good pack gun for pretty much everything in the US short of bears and moose sized game. TNA

I have somewhere around a half dozen Coopers..ranging from .204 to 30-06...all shoot very accurately ..some of the ones I have were purchased prior to Cooper offering a repeater..have single shot rifles in .204, 220 Swift, and 6/284. All 3 of those will shoot half inch groups with certain loads...the 6/284 is a nasty little caliber..have that one shooting 70gr Blitzkings around 3900fps+..

Have a repeater in 30-06 that I purchased with the intent of one day shooting a leopard with ..figured that with a nice Swaro scope on it would be just the ticket for shooting from a blind..

Have another repeater in 6.5/284...also a very good shooter..took 2 antelope with last season..

They make a lightweight version as well that I have heard a lot of good things about..one of the local gun shops I frequent actually sent a few back to Cooper to have the triggers redone as the gun shop felt they were set too light for the masses...

Thanks Ripp, lines up with what I’ve heard. I’ve never had a 257 before so I thought it would be fun and I think soon enough my five year old may be able to take a deer with it.

I have a 6.5x284 Phoenix and it shoots awesome.

I bought my dad a Model 54 (?) also in 6.5x284 and it shoots great but the magazine sucks!!

Does not feed super reliably. My understanding is they are 30-06 mags that get a little touch up and i’ve tired 3 with not awesome results.

As well as they shoot I would not buy another, customer service was ok but they eventually just told me the mag I had was as good as it would get and they could do nothing else.

Thanks for the feedback sorry to hear about your issue. I get that they may not have a solution but their response is certainly lacking, if they can’t make it work as advertised they should buy it back or offer a different caliber.

I had the exact same issue with my 6.5/284..sent the entire rifle back ..they returned it about 10 days later and with 2 magazines that now work perfectly.--no charge for the addl magazine...so.....guess I had better experiences ..not sure what the issue is with that mag in that caliber...as have had no issues with the others...

Still debating caliber. 257 Roberts, 25-06, 257 wby, or 7MM 08.

Also, which bases are better warne or Talley will both readily accept all rings? Thx

What about the 6.5 Creedmore?

Talley bases rock.

I have a 6.5 so was looking for something a little different.

I’m mostly set on the Roberts because it’s probably the furthest from anything else I have but the 06 is interesting too.

Thanks for the info on the Talley brand will spec those.

What kind of rifle do you shoot the 9.3x74R out of? I just got my first double in that and shot it the other day. Lot of fun.

Chapuis SxS ejector rife. It’s a great little double.

I never got into the quarter bores. The 6.5 have always done it for me.

I have Talley on most rifles, swapping out scopes with the QR rings on all scopes is easy and I just can’t Seem to stop tinkering.

Chapuis are nice! I talked to them but couldn’t get them to build what I wanted.

I need something a little less than the 6.5 for my 5 yo. Maybe I’ll go with the 257 wby and not give much up. Thx

The 257 Weatherby is a screamer..have used several rifles chambered in that caliber..incredibly fast..100gr Barnes..3650-3700fps..have used it on black bears, deer, pronghorn, and one elk..one of my favorite calibers.. but for your young son I would stick with the Roberts..

Is the recoil of the Roberts significantly less?

YES..but "significantly" is a relative term..I do believe in having young shooters starting with very mild to mild recoiling calibers..the .257W to most is not mild recoiling..it is severely over bore..

Per this chart, the recoil difference between the two is between 60 to 70% more for the Weatherby..
http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

As I am assuming your son will not be taking shots past 300 yards or more.. I would stick with the Roberts..its a really cool old classic cartridge with plenty of energy to kill most anything here in N America..

Thanks Ripp, I had also just looked at that chart

I have a buddy with the wby and will shoot it before ordering but I think you’re right

The last thing I need is another gun but him getting older gives me a good excuse!

The .264 and .257 WTBY are big kickers compared to the .257 Roberts. I would equate the "Bob" in equality of recoil to a heavy loaded .243 or 6mm Rem., not much difference.

With good 100gr. bullets, ie: Partitions will do, the .257 will make about 3,100fps to 3,150fps. That is about the same ballistics as a maxed out 6mm Rem. Anything from 2,900fps to that range will work fine on most everything.

I used that bullet in my .257AckImp, but at 3,480fps, on a moose, side head shot, exited out the off-side ear, perfect 1" hole in the cartilage. Since that was a 40yard shot in the bush, most anything making the same shot would have worked, even a .222 with a 45gr. TSX., but goes to show, more than the easier shooting rifles is not normally needed. The next fall's deer at 80yards, same load, poleaxed - "dead right there". The old "BOB" would have done the same, even with a low-ball factory load. After those two years using it, I swore to get a standard Bob if I went .25 cal again.
Sold the AckIMp. 257 to a friend who 'needed' it, then years later, bought a .25/06 as it was a good price. Shot it a bit, too much for that bore size, so sold it the next year., dies, brass and all for a loss, just to get rid of it.
I then bought a .243 (couple) - NOW, I'm happy, but would have been happier, with a .257 Roberts - maybe I should re-barrel?

tks guys, I am blushing now, and my hat no longer fits.

The only reason for choosing the Roberts, is the 115 and 117gr. Partitions, excellent bullets at about 2,900fp, or higher for most NA game.

After spending from 1979, 29 years (wow) until now amongst the best hunting ungulate and bear hunting in the world, I am of the opinion I could easily do or could have done all my hunting with a standard .243 or 6mm or if larger, a .257Bob.
Buddy Keith and I had a talk about just this, perhaps a year ago. given the bullets of today, even smaller would also have worked, given enough time for the hunt. When time weighs heavily, as in a week or two only, the larger .24 and .25 cal. would have been lots. One naturally forgoes the 300+ yard shots on moose and elk, but 400 should be doable for deer and deer-type game, if the shooter is up to it.

Agree 100% with you Daryl..for about a 3 year period all i used was a .243W on everything I hunted..had made a bet with a buddy ...was a factory Rem model 700 with a VXIII Leupold 4.5-14 scope...shot pronghorn, deer, bears, and elk..along with 100's of P-Dogs and dozens of coyotes..frankly, its amazing how accurate you can get by just using one rifle..so the old adage is true, "beware of the man with one gun".. actually that rifle is getting re-barreled as we speak..or as I type this..and on antelope was still doing longish shots..400 -500 yards..got closer on deer and even closer for elk and bears..but kill it did..without prejudice or hesitation..

Picked up the Cooper today. 257 Bob with a maple stock uncheckered. Bought 6 boxes of shells both Hornady (117g) and Nosler (110g). Mounted a Leupold 4x12, ready to sight it in. Really want to shoot a pronghorn this fall with it. Test target is impressive, 3 bullets in the same hole basically.

Also may have accidentally ordered a Rigby Highland Stalker in 275....

When you say that you accidentally ordered a Rigby, are you sure it was accidental.

I hope that you enjoy it but please give us a report on how you find it when you get it. Do you have to wait for one to be made or did you buy a stock gun. Did you choose the 140 grain regulation or a different one. Good on you anyway.

Congrats on your purchase--think you will be pleased on how it shoots based on the ones I have shot/owned/tried....

Having said that i don't put "that" much faith in the target...it is shot at something like 40 yards in an indoor tunnel..having said that, every Cooper I have owned shoots very well..usually 1/2" group ..You should have a lot of fun hunting antelope with it..they are one of my favorite animals to hunt..can see how close you can get or snipe them way out there..great fun..and really good eating if prepared correctly and taken care of properly after shot..

A Rigby Highland Stalker???.Really interested in how that shoots once you get it, beautiful rifle...and great caliber..
