Quite a bird. Must be very strong tasting. I don't eat grouse that eat evergreen needles.

Absolutely lovely - those pictures, except for the Euro grouse, could have been taken in a number of areas around here, where I hunt moose.

Have to go back and read the article. Looked at the pretty pictures first time.

I LOVED hunting capercaillie when visiting ErikD to hunt moose in Norway in early October a few years ago. Never got one. We were using shotguns. The capercaillie were very smart. And when they took off, almost always placed the tree trunk behind them when flying off, in between its direction and me the shooter. So all one could see was its wing tips on either side of the trunk. Saw some black grouse as well. Lovely day of hunting. Enjoyed it very much. Even though ErikD loaned me some bright blue rubber boots or gaiters. I did look a bit funny I think. Have to find the photos one day. I want to do it again!

Shotgun hunting is very sporting. I understand most are shot with a rifle during the snow periods.

Missed out on a capercaillie but a couple days later, got my first and only moose.

Thank you!

Capercaillie was a delicasy in the days of the Czars, but much depends on the person who's cooking. Proper hanging of the bird is necessary, as far as I undersand. Never lived myself in places where they're numerous enough to hunt.

And just in case if you're thinking about going to Russia to hunt capercaillie, think fast. Visas and shotgun import permits may take a couple of months to get.
