What became of Harry Selby's Double Rifle ?
      #309984 - 05/01/18 09:07 AM

I'm sure almost everyone has read the story of Harry Selby and his 416 Rigby rifle. The story goes that the .416 was purchased out of necessity after someone ran over his Rigby .470 Double Rifle. Apparently, the barrels were bent beyond repair.

I wonder what happened to the darn thing.... Did the .470 just get thrown into some garbage can and left behind ? Did the gun ever get sent back to be re-barreled or repaired ? Has it ever been found ?

Interesting question - I bet the rifle still exists. Harry Selby is still alive so it might be possible to ask him if anyone on the forum knows how to reach him.

I'd like to know what happened to the push feed post 64 Model 70 in .458 that he used after he sold the .416. Perhaps it's still with him?

I think part of the story is that the double would have been too expensive and time consuming to rebarrel so the 416 was adopted.
My bet is that it ended up junked.

The .470 double was sent back to Rigby to be fixed. It took two years for them to do it. By that time Mr Selby had got used to using his .416 Mauser, and so he sold it.

We are so much the poorer for Harry not wanting to write a book or books of what must have been a wonderful life of hunting and guiding in Africa. Maybe one day one of his children will do so.
