Hello,

I have never had so much trouble finding information on a firearm, particularly one made by a company that is still in business. Emails to the company have gone unanswered and the internet has been generally useless.

General description:

Ludwig Borovnik - Ferlach
Appears unfired, or nearly so.

Boxlock Ejector
.300WinMag

Flaigs Import -- I have come across many of their rifles here in PA, but this is the only DR I have seen with their name on it. Most have been Mauser 98's of one type or another.

Swarovski Habicht 3-9x36

Ejectors work well and are timed nicely with snap caps. Caps land six feet behind the shooter and 3-4" apart.

I am planning to shoot this rifle to check regulation. Suggested bullet weight?


Looking for any information I can get, and a range of valuation.

Can't hep with the rifle. One of the euro members maybe able to help. Have you bought it ? or looking to buy it ?

If the scope is the steel tube Austrian made model (I'm pretty sure it is) it is one of the few scopes that has appreciated in value since introduction.

Lovely looking combo despite the cheap chequering.

One of our Admins is on record as an owner of a Borovnik double rifle. No doubt he will prove very informative.

this double was built like a FORT, chopper lumps double crossbolts, for HI Intensity 300 Win.Magnum
i bet it was built for a CO of Flaigs maybe 1 of a kind ? Do you know anything else about it ?

I am in PA and know some history of Flaigs, but this rifle came out of Florida.

I tried a search, I swear!

I think Captain Curl is still on a vacation so he might be slow in responding, but he has both Borovnik 375 and a Winkler 300WM. Interestingly if memory serves me correct his 300 regulates with heavy 220 bullets!

I'm no historian and not an expert on Austrian doubles, but I do own a first rate double by Ludwig Borovnik. I also own a double by Josef Winkler chambered in .300 Win. Mag. Both rifles are very well made and very accurate.

The Borovnik, chambered in .375 H&H Mag., is very best quality and highly embellished. A few photos will illustrate:


















The Winkler .300 Win. Mag. is not as fancy but equally well-made. It is about the same grade rifle as yours.







Like yours, it has chopper lump barrels and ejectors. Mine fires 220 grain RN bullets with deadly accuracy, placing two rights and two lefts in 1.25" at 100 yards.

Your scope is a later addition to your rifle, as was mine. This may affect your barrel regulation and may make it more happy with heavier bullets as the mass of the barrel and scope assembly is greater than the original mass of the barrel assembly alone. Don't hesitate to try the .220 RN Hornady. You will be lucky if your rifle likes them. It is wonderful in a DR.

My Borovnik .375 is superbly accurate. It has no surprises in its preference for bullets: it was regulated for 300 grains.

Those with English tastes do not favor Continental doubles. They turn their noses at scoped doubles and those chambered for rimless or belted cartridges. They refuse to admit that a DR can be made to handle something like a .300 Win. Mag. While I am a great fan of the traditional English style and even prefer it, I am enough of a realist to accept what I see. These rifles do what they were made to do and do it well. There are still a number of makers who produce DRs in .300 Win. Mag.

My Winkler has proven itself in the field on a number of occasions.

The 375 is spectacular. I have a Jos Hambrusch engraved by Jos Just in 470 Nitro and it's one of my favorites. Let me know if you would ever consider selling.

Interesting calibre choices. The CIP on the .300 Win. mag is 62,000PSI, while the SAAMI is 64,000PSI.

They are both 62,000PSI on the H&H, .375.

There's a Eduard Kettner marketed Borovnik in 9.3x74R with Holland & Holland Sidelocks for sale that I will be pulling the triggers on soon.

I am planning to sell a few. I'm up to my ears in double rifles and need to thin out. If serious, contact me. That .375 was engraved by Johann Singer, then the foremost Austrian engraver.

Tinker, that Winkler .300 should be yours. I am entirely embarrassed to say the last round I put down its barrels was the shot that killed the bear pictured above - in May 2005.

Yes, I'm getting older and need to thin the herd.

Proofed 1972, Ferlach's worst time. Who removed the rear sight and screwed on that American non-detachable mount to hold the light alloy Kahles scope?
