.404 Chamber Reamer dimensions?
      #308104 - 22/11/17 09:23 AM

A friend spoke to PTG about a .404 NE reamer and they said there are 2 versions. Version 1 is the CIP standard reamer. Version 2 is another reamer that cuts a very slightly tighter chamber with a different throat angle and pitch. I do not have the drawings with me, but the CIP seemed to cut a slightly sloppy chamber and version #2 cut one closer to the case dimensions listed in Cartridges of the World. PTG says version #2 is popular right now. Which one should my friend order and why?

Thanks in advance.

CC

I would use #2 if it is closer, but still slightly larger than the chamber.

CIP specs tend to be quite oversize in head and sometimes neck dimensions, making for over-sizing/over-working the brass. With expensive brass, you normally do not want that.

What is nice when ordering a wildcat reamer, is getting what you want, measurement wise.

I have always had good luck with Dave Kiff, of Pacific Tool and Gauge. That said, I know nothing of the .404NE, except that I've wanted one since I was 15yrs. old.

Drawing of my reamer. I bought it from Pacific Tool and Gauge around 15 years ago.
