Too much speed for this old guy. If I shot an animal 600yards away, who'd going to go get it? That train has passed.

THAT is the beauty if this round..you can load it to anywhere from 30-06 and 300WIN mag velocities to 3300+fps..IMHO, this is one of the most versatile rounds for all around N American hunting ever developed..using the correct bullets, works well on pronghorn to elk and everything in between.

I have taken more game with this caliber than probably any other rifle/caliber I own..been with me on 5 trips to Africa -Alaska..dozens of elk, N Dakota Whitetail, etc...

Don't agree you need a muzzle break being needed..Have been shooting mine since 2000..never had a muzzle break on it..nor do I have one on my 7mmRUM, 338RUM or 375RUM....however if you are recoil sensitive, this is not the caliber for you..

I finally put a new barrel on mine last year only because i wanted a fluted barrel..been shooting dozens and dozens of rounds per year ..still was shooting under 1" groups after 17 years of shooting and hunting..truly feel for the "average hunter" the barrel would last a lifetime..not that that concerns me as I feel they always make new barrels..

If I were to hunt the world with only one rifle, this would certainly be one I would strongly consider..with 200gr A-Frames, it has flattened everything I have ever hit with it up to hippo..if it sounds like I am a huge fan, I am..

BTW, Daryl, if you make that 600 yard shot, let me know, I'll go get it..

Very impressive. I would think it would be easy to down load as Ripp says for practice.
I think I have mentioned I am building a 358RUM based on the 338RUM case. It is surprisingly easy to shoot. It is on an P14 Action and a Boyds stock. Still working on the magazine but having shot it with 200 and 275 grain bullets I find it fairly tame.

Remington actually offered those back a few years ago if you remember..level 1, 2 and 3 as to speed/performance.

Interesting what you are building..let me know how it ends up..i personally always wanted to do a 416RUM..think it would do very well in Africa..

LOL- tks for the offer - but by the time you got here, I'd be locked up for shooting wolves and grizzlies off bait.

Too, I fired one shot from a friend's .338 RUM. That was enough RUM for me, unless it is the liquid type - that's OK. Jamison's is decent - my tastes in liquor are not expensive.

Of the liquid sort I like Bundaberg- Aussies own- or Poofter Hill Rum, sorry I mean MT Gay Rum

Ripp when I get it sorted I'll let you know performance. I aim to run Woodleigh 300grain soft nose and their 225 Hydros and maybe some 175 grain Monometals for speed

I’ve been wanting to add a big 30 to my collection at some point. The 300 Norma is the one I would pick.

That will be a good option, slightly behind the 300RUM. 338RUM equals a 338 Laupa and this is based on the full size 416 Rigby case, the 300Norma a shortened 416 Rigby case.

I would choose the BIG .300 H&H Magnum.

The original and the "best".

Have one of those as well in a pre-64 Winchester...needs some work but always wanted to take it along with my WR 470 double on a hunt in Africa.. figured it would be an ideal combo..

The 300 H&H is a great choice... IMHO

I have a 300 h&h and a 300 weatherby. I know all about the advantages of the weatherby; higher velocity, more modern case shape etc. but I love the 300 h&h.

Daryl,

Grabbed a copy of RELOADER last night and read the article on LONG RANGE shooting..

Have to say was not that impressed with the info.....feel their "computer generated" info was off considerably in terms of velocity in most cases..3100 for a 165 GR bullet out of a 300RUM?? really? factory Remington loads with 180's is at 3250...same for many others shown..which made me question the remainder of the info..

Yeah - few numbers off - I noticed that one - 3,100fps With/165/8 would be a good stiff load for a .300 Win. Mag. Who knows if the writer got it wrong, or the editor who changed the article to 'fit' his head space.
Point about the 'records' is spot-on. I do applaud the Brit sniper with with double kill of Taliban on the machine-gun, at about 2,400 meters with his .338 Lap. Supposed to be a 1,500meter rifle.

i love ya ripp, you all know this is nitro express lol.goin on a white tail hunt in the mountians after turkey day. the object of ours is complete over kill. the plan is that the deer does not leave its tracks. i'm bringing my 45-120 and a slug browning. my handicapped buddy uses the 300 rum. he was deadly growing up . the army made him deadlier. he makes his wife get the deer.i shot the 300 rum its not unmangeable. the other buddy shoots a 58 springfield.hoping to change the rules put everyone's rifle in a hat and draw another ones rifle. should be 3 or 4 others playing. wish my 458 lott was done. but i'd like to put a box through the 300 and see how it does.

Well, the .45/3-1/4", .58 Springfield and slug Browning would be fun. The others, not for me.

My brother's Shiloh .45 3-1/4" really liked 62.0gr. Re#7, a stack of card wads and a 300gr. Hornady, I think it was- might have been Sierra - it was a FNose, not hollow point. Cloverleafs at 100 meters - tang sight only. That load made 2,260fps mv. and exited a bull moose, broadside. Mind you, it was a 3x3 - 18 months old and dressed at 370 pounds, sans feet, head, hide and guts. The exit hole was 1" in diameter with no meat damage.
The moose was only 40 yards away, so impact speed was quite high. The bullet performance surprised me.
