I Hollis and Sons - Manufacturing date
      #307081 - 31/10/17 12:19 PM

Hi there

I recently purchased a I Hollis and Sons 500/450 NE on an auction

I looking for a date of manufacture !

The proof marks seems like it is very similar to the Birmingham proofs of 1896-1904

Serial Number is 61620

There is no address on the gun, further complicating the dating

At a stage I saw a serial number list with associated dates of manufacture for the Hollis company but I am unable to find that post again

The gun was advertised as a BPE gun but during the bidding someone realized that is was actually proofed for a cordite load , so I went for it

The bore looks like new and the case hardening is in very good nick

Any help would be appreciated

Kind regards

Nigel Brown's British Gunmakers Volume 3 says 1896-1904 but does not list rifles and shotguns seperately.

I don't have anything for dating, but here's a brief Load Discussion from a few years back on this 70gr load.

Certainly a great old rifle there Frikkie007
Will be a bit over the top for bears on full loads, but the NFB load should be pretty good on them!

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm super happy with the rifle, can wait to get it shooting again!

Thanks for the link with the reloading thread as well Tinker

I took my 450 NE 3.25" out for Black bear hunting 2 seasons ago....what a blast!

Cheers

Frederik
