My Czech grandmother whacked a brangus bull that size with a rolling pin once when it tried to step onto the porch and walk into the kitchen...the bull decided wisely to back off (she was not a woman to mess with).

The photo you posted makes me want to go back to Oz and whack one for the taxidermist...can you guys come up with enough people in NT for a large barbeque?

Richard.

Also if he used that Winchester in the photo to kill it, any idea what calibre it was?

Alan:
Your mate's bull is indeed an incredible achievement, even more so in the current post-BTEC era
of relatively low buffalo numbers. However a good number of very large bulls (and some exceptional cows!)
were taken during the days of the big herds, and never recorded. At that time,
absolutely no-one would have run a tape over a set buff horns and quoted the SCI score!!

I suspect that Frank Hardy's displayed set might have given your mate's trophy a run for the money,
had it been scored in the same manner.

Personally, I hope we get to see plenty more big fellows popping up from time to time,
its a great pity that the benchmark for a good trophy bull these days is only 100 points!

Its been a long time since I've seen a bull hold his head sideways to run through the paperbarks!

I agree Marrakai, I don't think this one would have been measured properly so it would have given him a good run for his money! Very nice buff though! Love to see one that size...

I thought the same thing, he wouldn't be able to go many places with a set that wide, they would get caught on everything!

Tony ,I totally agree with your comments and I'm sure that some huge buff were shot by skin shooters that would make Colins buff look average. However this buff was hunted and harvested as a tropy and at present is being fully mounted by Mel Burton in Queensland..
Rowland Ward measure buff on the outside spread ,not length of horns so it is a big trophy head and the word is that a few of his mates are still running sideways through the tea tree.
2 years ago on a hunting trip up north our group harvested 5 bulls rangeing in size SCI from 93 to 116 so there are still plenty of bulls over the 100 mark...
Only one bull was under the 100 score and I shot it because it was attacking the local natives and their vehicles and decided to take me on whilst I was out walking on the edge of the flood plains..

Ok, I'm curious.
The guiness book of records has the biggest buff, one bull shot in india? in 1955 (as worlds largest) with horns measuring 4.24 m (13 ft 11 in) from tip to tip along the outside curve across the forehead.
I presumed they were the same species of buff?

I cannot answer your question except to say it may not have been registered as a hunting trophy with RW or SCI or BC ect.
Hows the weather treating you down at sleepy hollow ?

OK, I think I may have opened up a can of worms here! When I said the biggest buff in the world, I didn't mean it literally, just an expression of how big it was!

It is quite common on the web for uneducated persons to use cape buffalo photos for "water buffalo". Must be easier to pinch cape buff photos than water buff photos and then use them on the net.

No worries Alan, have a few mates in port.

I dont bother with animal pics on sites as they are usually the wrong animal as pointed out.
I figured a buff shot in india would be an asian water buff?

Samantha

In India there are two main species of wild bovines, the water buffalo, which also is a domestic beast, and the gaur, also known as seladang (Malay) and akin to our wild banteng cattle. May be other species as well but definitely not cape buffalo.

Writers also refer sometimes to wild bison, which I believe is the gaur (???). i don't believe there is any actual wild bison in India.

A good source of information is the ultimate ungulate website.

That is great news. I haven't set my plans yet but if I am up there at the same time we can meet up. You're still hunting the second week of August or has it changed? Are you hunting with your father or someone else? Pigs still on the agenda?

Mate, I think you will have fun.

Well, this is not sure yet but I've booked my air tickets on August 15th. I'll be in Darwin on 16th. I'll start to hunt in Dorisvale for pigs and then I'll move to Gan Gan to look for buffalos. My dad is still thinkin' about it .

I want to fix this plan this week, so I'll tell you when sure .
