M77 458 Win Mag
      #30232 - 29/04/05 02:08 PM

I found one of these pretty cheap in good condition. This is the older model with the tang safety and the "plain" stock. It does not have the front swivel stud mounted ahead of the foreend like the new guns and the rear sight looks different, but other than that it is a nice looking gun.

Do these guns have the same function as the newer Ruger RSM's? Controlled round feed, etc.

Should I even bother with it or just hold out for a new RSM?

Thank ya'll for your help (again...)

The older Rugers in 458 WM are push-feed. Such as it is, it's a joy to shoot as the recoil is a nice solid shove. Mine has such a plain stock that it basically looks a Walmart special. I plan to convert it to CRF and restock it in the future as I do like the rifle and the caliber. The only thing I absolutely hate is the rear sight with the two teeny-weeny screws used for windage. I'll probably just change the rear sight with an NECG one also.

The one I "had" recoiled at a
rate I wanted no mas. It was a
handsome rifle. The straight
design of the stock made sure
you felt every footpound of
recoil.

How can you convert a 77 MK1 to CRF?

Send it to a GOOD Riflesmith/Machinist. The ejector slot can be done easily and the bolt face is redone so that the hole is invisible for the old ejector and the claw is remachined with judicious tig work thrown in. As I said, it takes a good craftsman to do this and I would have done this a year ago but family problems popped up. Any pushfeed can be converted with the proper work.

The only thing I didn't like about the original Ruger 458 is it had that huge barrel and was heavy as hell, and since I use my big bores a lot in the field, I want a lighter rifle such as the new ones...Its easy enough to convert the old pushfeed to control feed but its expensive, and the safty needs changing also, better to sell it and buy a new one most of the time.

Nah! I like the way this old-ass 77 shoots. Just gives you a good solid shove. Of course, the plain Jane POS stock has definitely got to go. Since I've already got a 458 Lott, the 458 WM is the go-to bigbore just for the helluva it because it doesn't beat the crap outta me.

adviCe = don't bother bidding on it.

Guns can't be bought/sold on e-bay.

Dude, if it can be had for $450 to $500, then it would be OK. If not, pass on it. However, it is hard to find a decent used 458 WM nowadays that isn't priced close to retail.

As new_guy said, you can't sell or buy guns or loaded ammo on Ebay. What are you on about WRM458?

Did you get it?
I have a CZ .458WM but am thinking about rechambering to Lott simply because it will fix the problem with the magazine empty space. It's a real pain at times!

Tunofun,
Good move the Lott is one hell of a better caliber and it can be loaded down to .458 specs and shot a way less pressure...

I've got that same M77 .458 and it's surprisingly pleasant to shoot - just a good shove, not abusive or painful in the least, even off the bench.

I plan on replacing that rear sight with an express leaf type and may or may not look into the conversion to CRF. As it is now it's a very slick action. It's been 100% reliable and shoots like a dream, so can't say much bad about it at all! I even like the tang-safety as it's very fast and natural to get into action.

I just got a case of sticker shock today. I saw a guy on ARF posting a 77 458WM for $750. I also saw some other 77's elsewhere going for the same price. Damn, it doesn't take long for inflation to kick in.

458

BTW, the same guy who did my sight was going to do the CRF conversion and has now retired due to physical ailments. He's sold off all his mills, lathes and welding equipment also. I guess I'll be looking for somebody else to do it. But then again, maybe not.
