.500 Linebaugh Conversion
      #306168 - 10/10/17 05:06 AM

Presented is a .500 Linebaugh shotgun to rifle conversion I've finished up. It started life as a 20 bore shotgun, then converted to the .500 Linebaugh revolver cartridge for the client to hunt driven deer in New York. It was also restocked by me using a stunning piece of Turkish walnut!

WARNING-beginner photography!

Very nice rifle. Beautiful piece of wood !!!!!!!!!! I'm curious why your client chose the .500 Linebaugh (and I'm not saying it's a bad choice , just curious) ?
Again, beautiful rifle !!!!!!!

Well done Aaron, it might be beginners photography but it certainly not beginners gunsmithing. Really well done, the rifle looks fantastic, lovely piece of timber.

Stunning, Aaron, absolutely stunning.

I might have thought the .460 S&W might have been a better choice, but I'm not the one who ordered it. Good idea, though for the HP revolver round.
That would make a great woods gun for N.A. game.

I am the client. Why I chose 500 Linebaugh:

1. Aesthetics. I wanted the gun to resemble a British double elephant gun, but I didn't want the recoil of a real elephant gun cartridge. Thus, i wanted the barrels to have great big bores. The 500 Linebaugh fits that role perfectly. Also, this being a double gun, I wanted an easily ejectable rimmed cartridge. Again a revolver cartridge seemed like a good choice.

2. Ok, so I picked the caliber in a rimmed case but now finding a low pressure round. I didn't want the gun to shoot itself apart. For example, 454 has a very high chamber pressure. I spoke with Linebaugh himself and the folks at Buffalo Bore and even a very hot 500 Linebaugh load comes in under 30,000 psi.

3. I may be wrong here, but I do not believe there is any animal in North America that wouldn't be dead if you shoot a hard cast, half-inch, 1 Oz bullet at 1100 FPS through its ribs. 500 Linebaugh has done well Elk and Moose so I think a 150 lbs New York State deer shot at 35-75 yard will present no problem. We'll see this year at my family's annual Thanksgiving day deer drive. You only get a few seconds to shoot and scopes are actually a handicap in the thick woods

4. Other alternatives may have been 45-70. Which would have given me a tapered case as well. 35 Rem would've worked too, but the 500 Linebaugh has a special panache for me. Especially since I also own a Ruger Bisley revolver in the same cartridge.

MarineMD that 500 would make a great hog gun and it will go together with your Bisley revolver.

MarineMD,

Not my choice of cartridge............but it's not my rifle.

Beautiful rifle.

There's a lot to be said for a smaller calibre/energy double that you can shoot a lot more and enjoy without getting kicked to pieces.

I agree with what you say about the performance of this cartridge on game. There's nothing that would stand up to well placed shots from that cartridge. Remembering that there would be elephant successfully shot with them............and lesser cartridges.

Nailed it Huvius!

I guess we all associate a certain calibre(s) with a certain type of firearm; if different we go well that's unusual......but I still really do like it!
And yes I do like unusual calibres/combinations!
That is what it is all about, doing something we enjoy!
Really looking forward to seeing what it will do MarineMD.

Stunning rifle, and with detachable sidelocks, too!

I went back and read your posts from three years ago. The caliber and rifle were well thought out and well executed. I also see you have acquired a pistol in the same caliber like you considered back then, a rifle and pistol pair. Great project and great outcome.

A few requests, please. First, what are the barrel lengths and rifle weight? Second, post some pictures of how it does on the deer hunt. Lastly, don't wait another three years between posts. The suspense is killing me!

Nice rifle and an interesting cartridge to match! That would be a terrific pig thumper in the thick stuff.

That's very nice work. I can certainly see the utility of a .500 Linebaugh in a North American woods rifle.

My sincere congratulations to both the owner and the maker.
