I was curious of your opinions of the value of the Hartmann & Weiss guns as time progresses?

Is the company going to transition into the next generation or cease to exist once the founders move on and how will that affect the gun value?

Are they going to be the newer fine gunmaker that will become as lauded as Holland & Holland, westley richards etc..?

There early guns are nothing special but the later stuff certainly is quite amazing. They did try selling the business a little while ago but go no takers. To specialised and apparently the majority of their work is bought by half a dozen collectors who are all getting quite old and therefore they don't really have a wide customer base, which makes the business difficult to sell.
There have been a few super grade gun makers who have retired recently and couldn't sell their business for the same reasons, such as Bertuzzi in Italy.

Is Karl-Heinz Ritterbusch still in business? I sent an e-mail and it bounced back...and his website is acting strange.

It seems some of the German smiths are seeing their market share dry up. It's a shame, they do beautiful work.

Reimer Johannsen is another smith I always wanted to meet in person but you don't see a lot of his work in the US.

Doesn't seem to be in business any longer. I tried his website a while ago and there was nothing happening. Kudue or Lancaster might know the answer.

He responded to my e-mail and advised that he had closed his business. Shame, it looks like he simply closed it...no sale or continuation of the line. Such is the reality of getting old, I guess.

One German gunmaker told me that the ban on shipping guns and rifles to Russia hit the upper echelon German makers like a punch in the stomach. It was their biggest market for high-end guns by far and it dried up virtually overnight.

I suspect we are starting to see the ripple effect of this. After all, there were (and still is) quite a bit of trading with regard to certain parts, barrels, etc amongst the name German smiths. If one business is taking strain it will be a question of time before another inter-dependant business also starts to feel the heat.

Makes sense what you are saying, the Russians were big buyers of high grade guns. One would have to assume that the Austrian gunmakers based in Ferlach would also be feeling the same pinch as Russia was one of their biggest markets. Sad really, we will all loose when these sort of things happen.

I didn't realize there was a ban on shipping sporting guns to Russia. Is this something to do with EU or US sanctions or is Russia banning the imports? If the latter, is it in retaliation for EU sanctions? I had the impression Russians were enjoying greater access to sporting guns than in the past.

This was about 14 years ago, but a pleasant young fellow from Yakutsk was here at the University of Northern BC as an exchange student to learn English.

He was a hunter 'at home', so we went for a drive, saw 3 moose which totally amazed him that you could go for a drive on a road and see big game. We shot some grouse and had a feed of them for supper than night.

He noted they were "allowed" to own up to 5 shotguns, but no rifles at that time. Of course, due to the expense, he and his friends either had a Baikal SxS or O/U for ALL of their hunting.

From what I understand it is an EU ban. Blaser as an example are not allowed to sell rifles to Russia but they can sell shotguns.

Since Russia occupied the Crimea nothing that goes bang! may be exported from the EU to that country. But the USA too severely restrict exports, even to friends: For years now, no .223 selfloaders, even Ruger Mini 14s, may be exported to Germany. Some time ago I got this email from Numrich / Gun Parts Corporation:

Dear Valued Customer,

Effective April 5th, 2017 we will resume shipping to Canada and U.S. Protectorates. All AES charges will be discontinued and international shipping charges will be applied.

Unfortunately, as a result of regulatory constraints and the cost associated with handling export shipments, we can no longer service all other international sales. All such sales are being discontinued and the accounts will be closed.

We enjoyed doing business with you and we wish you the best in the future.
