Yeah - no littler bugger, either! Beefy man.

I could feel that in my stomach when the gun went off.

Yes. Thank the good lord for smokeless powder and the advent of the 450 Nitro Express!

Very hardy sportsmen "back in the day"....

I had the pleasure (???) of shooting Ray Meyer's T. Bland 4 bore single shot out in California before he passed away; full 14 dram (380grains) black powder & 2000+grain conical bullet loads no less. Two shots @ 25 yards and hit the bull both times, the cloud of smoke is most impressive. I think the rifle weighed 19lbs if memory serves.
Makes a "common" 8 bore seem tame in comparison.

Cal Pappas tells me that the rifle is now living in Alaska and has made appearances at his double rifle shoot. I may need to try to attend one day and go for a replay.

I thought it interesting they didn't take a picture of the caisson and limber. Could one call that "non-wheeled artillery"?

I am sure the people that own them enjoy shooting them, but just like brussel sprouts I don't think I will be rushing out and buying one or even trying one.

Regards Trevor

Mike, I'm the current owner of Ray Meyer's 4-bore Bland single and 8 double.Come up to Anchorage the first Saturday in May for our shoot and you (and everyone else) are certainly welcome to shoot them! It is a fun and VERY informal affair with lots of good rifles, good food, and great folks.
Bob

Beautiful rifles, Bob - I do not think I would/could shoot either, even with my PAST shoulder protector on, although I'd dearly love to shoot the 8 bore.

Daryl, the beauty is you can load to any level you like. With BP and a 2100 grain bullet 8 drams of black is about the limit of anything I'd call fun. A full power roundball load is a bit over 1500fps, but a plinking load of 700fps with smokeless powderfeels like a 17lb 20 gauge and is just plain fun. Even kids have a hoot making big holes in targets with none of the pain and blast. I usually bring 10-15 light loads, a few mediums, and the rest full power ones to our shoots so you can pick how much punishment you want or work your way up gradually without getting hammered or dropping the gun.

Yes - true, recoil is what you make it.

Bob, What a surprise to see the pictures of those rifles! I do have fond memories of Ray (a true gentleman) and shooting that Bland 4 Bore. Did not shoot the 8 bore as I had a Greener 8 Bore at the time. The 8 Bore double was a Holland & Holland if I recall correctly?
Cal has also extended the invitation to pop up to the shoot in May, it would be a real step back in time to shoot that 4 Bore again....
