I would estimate/guess 1850's perhaps 1860's.

Go easy there Daryl! That was someone's pride and joy back in the day. They went to a lot of work painting those tiger hunting scenes on the stock. But it is pretty ugly...

http://www.aiolfi.com/vente/vente-milita...ysteme-dewalle/

"shotgun system Dewalle: double gun, 18 gauge, left "Dewalle Frères", right "patented in Liège". Length of the barrel: 78 cm, Total length of the weapon: 118 cm. It is a percussion weapon using the principle of superimposed charges (two charges per gun). Each barrel comprises two pistons, each plate comprising two hammers. These are actuated by a single double-acting trigger which first actuates the anterior hammer and then, with a second pressure, the posterior hammer. Dewalle was a gunmaker in Liège, worked around 1840 until 1862. The proof marks were made before 1853. The serial number (140) is very low. "

Now that is cool!
I suppose you could have the hammers on the same sear and it simply drops whichever hammer is at full cock.
Does this patent really reset the sear to the rear hammer somehow?

Can someone explain how this gun works? Why the double hammers?

The double hammers on each side allow for two loads per barrel.
The first load is dropped and the patched ball seated, then another load is dropped over that ball and another ball seated.
Front hammers capped and fired first of course.
I imagine that a very precise load and ball OAL is critical as to not get in the way of the flash hole for the front charge.
I've seen this arrangement before on another rifle - forgot where.
The rear load must get quite compressed from firing the front load!

gun is described as "Fusil" what would be a shotgun in french
I think it was mandatory to load a felt wad between the two loads to make it gastight and safe.

nice double rifle by "Fent in Steyr" having the crown of a baron it gives a good impression how expensive this double was

That is a most interesting gun! Not sure what the extra lever is for in front of the cocks, however, might be a holder for the cap or tube or pill of detonating powder which might be the ignition type of this gun - very early percussion weapon due to the dates.

If normal caps, they fit snuggly and need no help to stay on the nipple, which is why I suggested a tube or pill of detonating compound.
