New South Wales bans "Pit Bulls"
      #30508 - 04/05/05 05:19 PM

The nanny state in action again. NSW in Australia is banning pit bulls, Japanese Tosas, and Argentinian and Brazilian "fighting dogs".

They can not be sold, bred, or given away. Exisiting dogs must be de sexed.

I can't say I disagree on this one, it is not the owners fault, it is the dogs. They were bred for fighting and to be aggrressive. I don't like them because they are the type of dog that can turn on you, the owner, at any time.

tunofun,

I have to respectfully disagree about your assessment of pit bulls. I've owned several, and they were among the gentlest and friendliest dogs by nature that I have owned, and I have owned a BUNCH of dogs. They are easy to train, and can be made aggressive without much effort, however.

I even trained and used one for a pheasant dog about 20 years ago...named LB for Little Bear...LB would buck cover that a Lab would skirt around. He did have a tendancy to "tenderize" anything he retrieved, though...

That's fine, everyone is entitled to an opinion, just ours are different! I have never owned one personally, just hear all the bad stories and saw one rip the calf of the postie when I was a kid. My dad cut it's head off with a hatchet and it was still latched on... Kinda turns you off them!

I have to agree with you Tunofun.
A mate of mine has tried several different bloodlines and all ended up being put down, killed livestock, poultry and attacked any animal that moved.
Also bit some kids.
Afew years ago a study showed that more people were bitten by toy dogs, however in the medium to large dog range it was boxers and border collies.

Perhaps it is merely this area, but the law-breaking local biker gang and wannabe-bad-ass-type people are the ones who own Pit-bull dogs around here. Irresponsible people can make any dogs dangerous. Some breeds, like the Pit Bull sem to be more easily trained to be dangerous & or are prone to revert to that trait & are therefore seem to be sought after by these "Types" of people.
: The Pit-bull seems to be the breed which is attacking and mauling passerby people the most - hense I agree with the bans, where-ever they might be necessary.
: I do not agee with the neutering, though. If it is imperative for personal safety that they be banned, all in the area would still be dangerous, would they not? Does neutering 'change' this inherant aggressive behaviour? If still dangerous, they should be put down, not grandfathered.
