Read Ross's 16 bore Paradox article in the latest DGJ. He hints that the HP slugs from his original mould are doctored to expand (explode) on impact. Any idea what he is doing?

Only got mine the other day, just read it upon your recommendation.
I don't know where he is coming from. Does he want a Sir Samuel Baker exploding bullet???????

If you have a look at the 1900 H&H catalogue there is a lot of information on their Paradox guns including a picture of a 16 bore paradox cartridge 2 1/2" paper case with hollow point bullet on page 78
Page 28 shows three bullets taken from dead animals with very little deformity.
page 29 shows a picture of a 16 bore Paradox gun
The prices ranged from 65 guineas best grade through to 40 guineas lesser grades these prices were the same for 12,16 and 20 bore.

good to hear from you Robert.

Still curious about what the old timers were doing.

Forsyth's Exploding Bullets are written up and pictured in Sporting Rifles and their Projectiles, written by Forsyth and printed in 1863.

This book apparently, can be read on-line through Google or maybe it's Amazon.

If the original mould Ross is talking about, is the hollow point &/or copper tube version, he could easily have 'doctored' them as he notes.

Thanks Daryl.
I did think of copper tube but have found nothing in my research for copper tube bore gun slugs. Did the make them? and in particular 16 bore. The gun in question being made in the 1890s.
Had cartridge makers of the day moved on from copper tube projectiles.

From what I've read, the copper tube (not a bullet jacket) was inserted in the nose of the hollow point bullet & was usually the same size as a .22 Short RF ctg. It was either empty, just a copper tube, covered end or not to slow down the normal expanding rate of the bullet, or was primed and filled with BP or detonating compound for the more explosive type of 'shell'.

Back in 1863, Forsyth wrote and pictured shell moulds and the resulting bullets for bore rifles from 16(or 14) bore and larger.
