A Walk in the Park
      #304025 - 14/08/17 10:13 AM

Good work if you can get it!
Had to put up some extra signage and check pit-toilets and campsites at one of our local 'Back Country Hunting' areas last weekend,
but still found time for an 'armed bushwalk' in one of the three hunting blocks.

Ended up walking further than intended (!) but it payed off with 2 young buffs, five hogs and a feral horse.

Two of the boars were tuskers:

Took the jaw from that big black bugger, but left the spotty one in full possession of his ivory.

The buffalo were all young, no trophies there, but a pack-full of juicy tender back-strap meat added to the challenge of walking out!

Pretty sure those pit-toilets are going to need checking again in a couple of weeks....

Is it normal to shoot feral horses in oz? We don't typically hunt wild horses in the US.

008:
Feral horses are particularly destructive of Australia's natural environment, where our unique flora and fauna have evolved in the complete absence of hooved animals.
In conservation areas, such as the Park in question, all ferals are on the hit-list.
Our continued access is in large part dependent on successful management of the feral animal problem to reduce impact on the environment.
The alternative is to spend tax-payers money on professional helicopter shooting or aerial baiting, far less desirable courses of action in our view!

Here's a link to a Government fact sheet on feral equines in Australia's Northern Territory.

Thanks for your interest gentlemen.
The double is my old faithful Jeffery .400 3-inch.

I once harboured aspirations of wearing-out that rifle in my lifetime, but thanks to the gun-making skills of Charles Leonard that's looking less and less achievable with each passing year!

Marrakai, I was only thinking of you this week. Wonderful to see the little story. I am interested to hear about the "little back country" blocks in the "park". Is this all a new development in the NT?

Unfortunately won't make it I think up there again this year ... very disappointing, but one or two guys keen for next year, so that is the big plan.

Great to hear from you again, and see the 'little' .400 being taken for a walk again.
