I just happened across this and it eventually followed me home:

Type A in 9.3x62 with light contour 650mm barrel. Born in '39.

Love it.
So much so that I am in the process of making one for myself now. I am doing two 9.3s for myself in fact. One 9.3X57 (posted on this forum in the Rifles forum) and one very much like the one you posted here, in 9.3X62. My 9.3X57 will be a full stock carbine however.

I think the 9.3X62 has been unnoticed by most Americans for a very long time, but for some reason, within the last 8 months, many hunters here in Wyoming have come to appreciate it very much, and I have had several customers order builds or re-barrels to that caliber (mostly from 30-06s)
I ordered 7 .366" 1-12 twist barrels from ER Shaw about 6 weeks ago and they are all already gone. I need to order more soon.

The 9.3X62 is an outstanding cartridge and seems to be the closest thing to a "free lunch' that I have ever seen in a powerful rifle. It kills as well on most game as a 375H&H, yet kicks less, is lighter, holds more ammo in the mag, and is far less expensive as a rule. Cheaper brass, less powder, and can be made by rebarrelling almost any 25-06, 270, 280 or 30-05, with little of no modification to the freed lips. No Magnum action required! If you start with a GEW length Mauser 98, it's easy to modify the mag to hold 5 cartridges, so you get a "6 gun" for very little money as compared to a Magnum length action. Most GEW builds hold 4 and one, but some will take 5. All will take 5 if you know how to make the modification. If the rifle is complete however, it's often best to leave it as a 4 shot magazine because making the modification to the mag for the 5th round will show on an existing stock. if you are making the stock yourself you can easily make the wood fit the metal, so the 5 shot magazine is perfectly fitted and you can't even see the modification at all. It just makes Mauser fans look twice when you load the 5th round and they ask "how'd you do that"?

Matt, is yours made for 5 and 1 or just 4 and 1?

As Matt's rifle is an original Mauser, Oberndorf commercial, type A , the magazine is certainly made to take 5 cartridges. On their commercial rifles Mauser used at least 8 differently dimensioned magazines with their standard length actions to fit the various factory chamberings. On the A and B rifles in 9.3x62 they used a magazine with these inside dimensions: Length 85 mm, width front 22.4 mm, rear 20 mm (instead off the usual 17.7). Additionally, 9.3x62 magazine wells are about 2.5 mm deeper than standard for all the military actions. This means, if you want to restock one, you need a deeper stock too, as deep as one shaped for the Mauser Magnum action. It precludes using a standard 98 fiberglass or plastic stock with an original Mauser 9.3x62 action. If you want to replace the trigger, you will need a longer (Magnum) one too.

My rifle does hold five down.

On another note, forum member DPCD has sold close to 30 CNC'd Douglas 9.3 barrels made into Type A configuration. He made me one in stainless, fit it to a Mexican Mauser action, added a Recknagle front sight and Williams foolproof aperture rear. It is awaiting a synthetic stock to round things out. It feeds 9.3x62 like greasy sausage! I will soon have a pattern stock made from from my rifle, and I'm looking for someone to copy the rear sight for a run of a dozen or so. I was setting out to build a custom Type A style 10.75x68 when I ran across this rifle. Now that I have an original as a pattern, building the 10.75x68 should be much easier. Swift makes a 9.3x64 bottom metal that should work well for 10.75x68. The front of the magazine box may need slight massaging, but not much.

Hi kuduae,

I have the original Mauser listing, from Jon Speed book on Original Sporting Mauser Rifles, of all the magazine dimentions for each cartridge or group of cartridges.
By the way, not a Mauser, but my ZKK 600 original 9,3x62(1967) I post in the Rifles forum, has the following magazine dimentions:
Lenght: 88,5 mm
Rear width: 22,5 mm
Front width: 19 mm (if the width measurement is taken at the 85 mm lenght in the magazine, it is 20 mm...!)
And it can be loaded with 5 cartridges. Wich are feeded and ejected perfectly.
With 220 grs. FOX monometal bullets (made in Eslovenia), the maximum cartridge lenght with the bullets touching the lands is 88,5 mm. So I load it at 87,5 mm. Great!

Regards

PH

I'll post the 10.75 build when I get it rolling, but it's going to be a while, as purchasing this 9,3x62 has really set me back.

WOW - nice find!! Well done indeed.
[blank] 39 - that's still OK, though. My M70 preceeds it by 3 years. IF the M70 was a 9.3x62 - WELL!!!!!!! but it isn't - well done - jealousy abounds!

Daryl_S:

I spent the fall and winter of 2012-13 Fracking in Alberta and B.C. The moose on the route between Grand Prairie and Ft. St. John seem as numerous as whitetails in Texas. They made me almost poop my pants on several occasions when I drove frac equipment around. One day I might have to take my Type A and get some revenge on those suckers! It would be an expensive hunt, but a lot of fun I’m sure.

Go easy on those Northern moose. Around here, where the moose #'s used to be record per acre, they are rare indeed. We are currently having a scourge of wolf predation & record low moose survival #'s. Just kidding, fill your boots - you've earned it + having the right tool for the job.

Talking to a friend today at the local sporting good store. He got his bull with his 9.3x62 + 286gr. Nosler Partition. Destroyed the heart - "not a piece of his heart left."

It's generally a nite tough, but we usually slice the heart, moose or elk and fry it for supper in celebration that evening.

Other moose camps do this with the tenderloin. We eat 'is 'ort.
