My Steyr Zephyr 22lr..

Just thought I should post a few photos of my Steyr Zephyr Mannlicher.

This is made in the middle of the production run, with the Special steel barrel and upgraded wood stock.
It also has a singel trigger, instead of two. Which for me is a advantage with large hands.

Makes this the rarest of them all.. since most where ordered it with the double trigger.

Very nice rifle in superb condition. As far as 22 LR rifles go the old Mannlicher's and Mauser's are definitely the nicest. IMO. You can see why the Zephyr model was so expensive when it came out. Well done.

Very nice example, I had one the same many years ago & only a few weeks ago bought a lesser grade half stock model !

Mine is identical to yours. I have just fitted a set of Akah 2-piece mounts. They're marked "10" inside their base, which I presume means 3/8" dovetail. They have 3 advantages; one they have a windage adjustment in the rear ring. This means the scope reticle can be put in the centre by counting half the clicks back to centre, then any windage can be wound out from the mounts using a bore scope. Secondly, they give a quite practical view of the open sights. Third they also look good.

The scope is a German one but 25.4mm/ (1.0 imperial inch) tube. I just need a session at the range to fine tune the scope and then; look out rabbits. Whoever did the wood on yours did a very good job, BTW.

Oh, and I should add, because it might be of interest to you, that I first saw this model rifle in the Steyr Arms Museum which appends to the Steyr factory in Austria where this was presumably made, (they weren't sure). It was nicely mounted on the wall next to a Mannlicher Schonenauer 6,5x54 which it is such a close copy of that some of the parts look to be interchangeable, (trust me, I have one also). I did not think I would ever see one of these for sale in New Zealand and when I did, the deal was done on the spot. When I put it in a rifle vice at a small bore range, the tube shot one ragged hole at 25 measured yards. That is up there with the target rifles.

At first I didn't have a scope and just open sights which I had not checked. I'd had the rear sight off to tidy up a small amount of rust inside the dovetail so it was only put back approximate. I took it out hunting with a view of perhaps shooting a couple of pine cones or something. A hare was watching me from a distance, around 90m. I thought at that range I could drop a shot near him, and using the dust maybe calculate the offset for where the next shot needed to go. But more likely he'd run away. In the event, just one shot and he fell over dead! I'm not sure who was most surprised, him or me.

Kiwi_bloke you may have my old one, it was in very nice condition 20yrs ago & shot well, but I remember the trigger on mine was so so & so is this one I have now ?

That is indeed a lovely little rifle. I have never seen one here in England, or even read about that model. When were they manufactured? After 1945?

I have a 6.5 x 54, serial no. 25,xxx, "Made in Germany", so 1938 or later, and it would be fun to have a .22 version to accompany it.

They are a very nice rifle, getting hard to find & expensive here in the USA. I saw one hammer at auction at $2700 recently. Mine has the single trigger & full stock just as the pictured one.

Hi Sarg

The single trigger seems quite good on this one. It was proofed 1953 in Vienna. The serial number is quite low, just 3 numbers. The bolt and rifle do not match, (I have no idea why not), but a professional gunsmith readjusted the headspace by working on the bold handle root. It hasn't missed a beat since.

Lovely little piece there Northman!
It is in superb condition to say the least, a great little rifle to teach the young ones how to shoot properly & then hand down to their kids.
No problems for yourself either it seems for getting something into the pot with this little gem!
