Not to echo you Daryl but that gun is really neat. I would love to find a cheap plain one at a gun show. Looks to me like a PERFECT elk, moose, or bear rifle.

Does anyone have any idea how long the cases would be?

Certainly a very attractive and desirable rife but one thing confuses me

The Birmingham Proof marks on the barrel flats show 8 (for 8 bore, not a 4 bore) a major difference in the price/value (cartridge 4 bores being over double the price of 8 bores)?

I could not find a way to translate the German? text so of that would possibly show the answer

I’m thinking the same.
Four bores are absurdly disproportionate in the size of the locks and hammers opposed to the massive breech. This rifle looks much like other 8 bores to my eye.
Then, of course is the “8” on the flats....

A friend of mine owned twelve 8 Bore double rifles and four 4 Bore double rifles, two of the 4 Bore double rifles were Rodda's fully engraved and made for the Nizam of Hyderabad. They weighed 22 pounds each and were MUCH more massive than the above double rifle. I agree with TH44 and Huvius that it is an 8 Bore. Probably weighs 15 to 17 pounds.

a 16 ga+14 mm combination gun probably build by Johann Nepomuk Schemmetzler in Bruck an der Mur around 1830 as a muzzle loader , later rebuild into a breech loader for center fire cartridges by an unknown gunmaker. the 14 mm rifle barrel will using 28 ga cases, imho.

serial number on under rib only, 28 1/2in. barrels, the rib gold-inlaid 'JOH. PETERLONGO IN INNSBRUCK', with open sights, folding leaf sight and bead fore-sight, carved serpentine fences with diamond and dot engraving, nickelled lining plates to the striker channels, horn-encased Lefaucheux patent forward facing underlever, permanently attached fore-end, rebounding back-action locks with ornately carved dolphin hammers (one lightly damaged), set triggers, broad triggerguard with scrolled horn pistolgrip, the action, lockplates and furniture carved with bold acanthus surrounding game scenes of wild boar, roe deer, red deer, pointer and chamois, 13 3/8in. stock with cheekpiece and steel buttplate, missing sling eye, minor losses to edges of fore-end wood, weight 8lb. 3oz.

Exhibited: Manuel Lopo de Carvalho Collection

I like Holt's but in this case it seems the specialist come to their limits. only because it come from the iberian peninsula dont make it a 14,5x41R spanish berdan double rifle.

anyway, they try to identify this good as possible. there are not many informations around about the 40 mm long Kugelpatronen( bullet cartridges or better rifle cartridges) based on shotgun shell like here a 24/40.

14.5mm is .5709", so is closer to 24 bore (.579").

I won this. Interested in seeing more about it. Looks like there are at least some markings on it. I am thinking it either takes 12mm or 15mm cartridge. Maybe it is the unknown military experimental rifle made by Københavns Tøjhus for their arsenal-made carbine-length cartridge here:
