We all appreciate the beauty of Rigbys, Frasers, Dorleac, G&H and others, but I've just lately come to appreciate Bob Owen. The sporters he built, particularly the "arrowhead" stock guns from Sauqoit NY take a back seat to no one.

Check out the Owen on this page. I believe it's the 17th rifle on the page.

Apologies for the minor diversion, but....
Can anyone name the scope on the Pachmayr, Howe, and Griffin & Howe sporters pictured in the link above?

The narrow ocular bell (or lack of an ocular bell!) could be very useful for low-mounting on collectable period sporters that have unmodified bolt-handles. I have been unable to track down early German scopes so-designed, that were not built for rimfire rifles.

A high scope mount that lifts the firer's cheek off the stock just doesn't feel comfortable to me.

Thanks for posting the link mckinney, they are all very elegant sporters indeed, and Owen is in fine company there!

Marrakai:

The scope mounted on the Pachmayr, Howe, and Griffin & Howe sporters is a Zeiss Zielklein. They are a wonderful little scope, about 2.5X, usually with a post reticle. The "problem" with them is they are an elevation only scope, and therefore require a windage adjustable base. While this wasn't a problem in the day, they are few and far between now. Griffin and Howe, Echo, Jaeger, (and probably others) made them pre war, but they quickly went out of style as scopes like the Lyman Alaskan started to become widely available post war.

The Zielklein was used on both rimfire and centerfire rifles; they are quite robust and able to handle considerable recoil.

HTH

Thanks for the scope ID HTH, will keep my search engine warmed up for a nice example on offer.

Windage-adjustable mounts usually not a problem on the vintage rifles intended for such a scope.

Thanks guys, glad you liked the Owen and the other sporters. I didn't notice the responses until now. Michael Petrov was a man who knew what he liked in rifles and stuck to it in building his collection (unlike me:). He was also a great gentleman.

If anyone is interested in his files, they are with ASSRA, the American Single Shot Rifles Association - probably gathering dust in boxes somewhere. I'd love to see someone pick up on his work.

His collection was sold at Amoskeag in 2014 and the guns are now scattered among various collectors - probably with many of us. I managed to grab two - a Dubiel .30-06 Mauser and a Griffin .30-06 Springfield. In hindsight I wish I had tried to buy several more, especially the Harvey Rodgers and Owen guns. Let us know if you have any.

@Relics6165 - the Zeilklein is a sweet little scope isn't it? Optics are still serviceable and it doesn't detract from the lines of a rifle the way larger scopes do. Looks great on a .22 or a .375 H&H.
