Way to close for my liking. However he will have a story to tell.

In the first video it looks like the PH can't get the rifle bolt to open. Don't know if that is his or the clients rifle.

Yikes - lots of blood! Deep gashes. Close is right.

That second video really shows the lion going to work on the guy!
Lucky he didn't get his head or it would be all over.
And that rifle jamming up like that! If that's the PH's gun, he needs to reconsider his line of work...

That is the PH's gun that is locked up. It's not jammed it's locked, he can't get the bolt open-unlock.

It also appears as he is trying to unlock-open the bolt it fires off into the air. That could just be an illusion from the poor video quality.

Clients rifle appears scoped.

That close doesn't seem to be a time for crossed sticks. The client can't swing as the rifle is held in by the sticks. The client has to move his feet/whole body to swing.

It real safe for us to sit here and second guess, however. We weren't the there to see what happened-really.

I can't believe that everyone was ignoring a lion which was clearly not dead. I believe in continuing to shoot until there is no doubt that the job is done. There have been a number of incidents where hunters have cut the tail off of a "dead" elephant and left it, only to return and find it gone, having only been stunned by a missed brain shot.

I believe it totally inappropriate for any of us armchair quarterbacks to second guess who should have done what by simply watching two poor quality video clips. The only thing I dare say is that I'm glad that I wasn't the one that ended up with deep bacteria filled bleeding holes in my shoulder after being used as a lion chew toy.

Holy shit!!!!!! DG hunting indeed!!!!!!

It is entirely appropriate to comment, that is one of the very reasons for a PHs existence, to ensure things don't go south in a big hurry. It does look like the PH's rifle discharged as he was trying to unlock it, fortunately it was pointing in a safe direction and nobody else got hurt, and he looked to be wearing a handgun on his hip, if so for christ sake draw the fucking thing it and put a bullet in the head of the still moving lion. Sorry but it all looked to be an incompetent fuck up, one I wouldn't be paying a PH for.

My thoughts on the handgun too. Also if my rifle was U/S I would be grabbing the mauled blokes rifle and shooting the downed but not dead lion if no handgun.

I would like to know all the details as the video may not show all reasons for the oops moment. Also, as said it was the wrong situation for the client to be on the sticks. Maybe for first shot but should be off them for any follow up shots or if quarry starts to move fast in any direction but straight at you you need to be off the sticks. This is just my opinion.

Yeah someone always thinks that.

But it is also educative for hunters on just what can happen.

Hiding in a closet isn't going to stop antis from trying to get something banned. And most idiot antis cheer the lion when something like this happens ...

The injured guy is the assisting PH. He has fully recovered from another knowledgeable PHs comments online. Incident was about four years ago.

I am not sure who the principal PH was in the videos.

Not sure who the person with the jammed rifle was. It does happen. But there were enough rifles in that crew to do the business.

There should be sound in the uploaded video(s). Will have to check.

It is easy to be an expert commentator watching an internet video. But it just goes to show how quick a lion can be. I think the shot on the lion when the attack was still underway showed restraint and caution. Instead of instantly firing when the guys body or head could have been hit, the shooter waited until the lion was clear of the guy before firing. I thought that was well done.

As for the lion lying there and still moving, well one guy asked abother to shoot it. I assume it was the PH helping the injured guy who noticed the lion was still moving and asked someone to shoot it again. I would have to watch it again to see how much the lion was moving, because I thought it was moving (from nerves) just as much after the shot before the guy, probably the client, shot it again and was told it was enough. Easy to be cool and collected watching a video. And re-watching it. Happens all in split seconds in real life and shit happens.

PH`s are like police or pilots that are trained to "do it right"

Lots of police or pilots have failed when the pressure is on whether they topped their class or not in the simulator.

Real life is different eh,how do you learn to cope with an angry lion unless in real life, (pop up pics? err no!) thus those fellas learned a shitload of 'lion rules' that augers well for future encounters.
The scars on the fella and the tale to tell (enhanced of course) is probably worth it for bragging rights by the fire lol!
I would rather listen to him than " i strangled an impala ram"
