Coments on the use of the 9.3X57 Mauser?
      #301766 - 15/06/17 02:39 AM

Hello to all.
Who here has hunting and killed game with a 9.3X57 Mauser Cartridge?

I am looking for information and stories about the performance of the cartridge on game and details of the shot angles, range, and bullet used, velocity (barrel length may help)wound channels and bone broken and so on.

I am hoping to make one for myself this year along with a 9.3X62 I am making now.

I own and have used a 9.3X74R in my Ruger #1 quite a lot, so I have some experience with the it. I will assume I will see nothing much different from the 9.3X62.

But storied about the use of the 9.3X57 are rare in the USA.
Please,,,,,do tell.

I have shot several whitetail deer with 9.3x57 Husqvarna.
All were basically broadside double lung shots, 20-65 yards range.
None of the deer were large (120-150 lbs). None required more than one shot and all had complete bullet pass through.
The bullet I use is the Prvi 285 grain rnsp @ 2100 fps.
The entrance wound is just a bit smaller than the bullet diameter. Exit wound has been the size of a quarter. Very little meat damamge, just a couple of holes in the ribs.
Good blood trails that start immediately and have gone between 20-60 yards.
I have tried the Speer 270 grain bullet in test medium but not on deer. This bullet acted like a varmint bullet during my tests. Rapid, violent expansion and explosive fragmentation.
The Prvi bullets I have tested expand evenly and retain 90% +/- of their weight.
I have toyed with the idea of cutting a few longitudinal slits in the jacket just below the exposed lead to give a bit more expansion but have not done it yet.

I also have had very poor results with the Speer bullet. That out of my 9.3X74R. I would not buy more for any reason other then target practice.

The Speer bullet does seem to be accurate, but from what I've seen of its performance from the x57 I can only think that coming out of a x74r or x62 would not do it any favors.

Here is a link to a post that shows 2 bullets from my expansion tests with the Prvi 285 grain bullets.

Rod (aka 9.3x57) has spoken highly of the Woodleigh 250 grain rnsn bullets for use in the x57 case.
I have not had any personal experience with this bullet yet.
