375 H&H minium rifle for DG ??
      #30179 - 28/04/05 05:01 PM

I understand that in some countries the 375 H&H is the minimum for DG. Is this standard based of CAL., Kinetic Energy, or Momentum.

Some of the .338's and .35's exceed the 375 H&H, has any one use one of the medium bores on DG

I've heard that some countries have a minimum of .40 caliber, but most will allow .375 H&H because is has a great record on DG. I personally have one in a DR and enjoy shooting it. I hope to use it on safari some day along with my .470 DR.

I've heard that some countries allow the 375 H&H and that other countries the minumin is the 40 cal. no 375s.

My understanding is that pretty much every place in Africa the 375h&h is the minimuim or they state the minimum in kilajoules of energy and I believe that the 375h&h also falls into the acceptable on that, but so do some of the really hot .30 and 338's.

From every one I've talked to the 375h&h is the absolute minimum for a stopping rifle , but pretty close to perfect for the client. Lots of pro's seem to use the old 375h&h for everything, but alot seem to prefer the over 40 and some over 45 as a stopping rifle.

THe 9.3 x 62 is min. in Zim, but in all other countries I know of, 375 H&H us the min. The fact that some .35's have more energy really does not matter because energy is not what kills large animals. They are killed by a bullet of sufficient diameter penetrating the vitals. The old British rule of thumb was .40 cal or bigger, .300 sectional density, and 2000 fps. But if you ask most PH's what you should bring, most will suggest a .375 HH because not that many people can shoot the bigger bores well.

I seem to recall that 9,3 is accepted in most west african countrys. Perhaps since they were French at one time, and 9,3 is a common European calibur?

for the most part the rule is uninforced and if your PH knows and approves your 358 STA or .358 Norma or even the .338 Win Mag you can use it.....but you will need his approval in advance.
In all sincerity now.....the trip for DG is well over $10,000 and depending on what the game is it's over $30,000 and if one can afford the trip then it seems one can afford a grand for a .375 H&H or bigger gun.

By law in South-Africa you are allowed to hunt buffalo with a 9,3X62 but in one province(KwaZulu-Natal your minimum alowed is a .375.But generally the .375 is minimum cal for DG in African countries.A lot of hunters try to bend this rule but the wise hunters stick to it.I wont hunt dg if my client hasnt got a 375 or bigger.

vapadog,

You would be amazed at how many folks will drop $15k on a nice .470 and $20k on the hunt but can't hit the broad side of a barn. I'm spending about 2 years practicing with my .470 and .375 before I go on safari. I'm pretty good with the .375 but stink with the .470 - I haven't work out the skeerd

Yep, I'm doing the same thing. Hunting with a .458 Lott and a 9.3X62 for my next trip back. I shoot the 9.3 a lot better at longer range. Am terribly over gunned for USA but you can't learn em if you don't shoot em.

No African country has a 40 cal. minimum, never have, most are .375 including the old Kenya...some in RSA have no minimum and only two States in RSA require .375 or larger. Zimbabwe has a 9.3x62 minimum that was set aside for some PHs that used it at the time, but it requires you to use a handload with an energy limit, but nobodys checking, so call the 9.3x62 good in Zim....Tanzania has a .375 limit for DG but again nobodys checking...Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia supposedly have a .375 limit and once more whos checking...

Basically in the bush you can use what you want for the most part BUT should you wound an animal and that animal kills or maims a native, your likely to be in a bit of s--t if your rifle does not meet the minimum requirement.....

While at SCI I noticed an outfitter from Botswana displaying a picture of an elephant which had been taken with a handgun. I asked my PH ( who did not guide that elephant hunt ) how an elephant could be legally taken with a handgun when the minimum for DG was 375 H&H. His reply was that the bore of the handgun was larger than 375. I guess that in Botswana energy is not part of the equation, only bore size.
By the way, the PH who did guide that elephant hunt said that the client demanded that he get her within 20 yds before She would shoot.

The problem, if thats what you want to call it, is the minimum caliber laws are not enforced in any African country, and lots of animals are shot every year that don't meet the specs, it just that they don't talk about it much...

Africans are a practical lot and the existing Gov. officials don't know squat about the laws, they just make them up as they go...
