Has anyone tried these cleaning kits?

Seems like a practical thing to bring on trips, as it doesn't take much space:

I take one on my sheep hunts. I usually break it down even further and leave the brushes out. Works fine. I've used a boresnake type set up also and don't think there is any difference.

For field cleaning it's a good setup.

Eric,
Yes, I've used an Otis "Kit&Caboodle" in the metal case for many years.
Always take it with me during safari work and it has often come in handy.
Last year during Cape York hunts I needed it twice.
Once when a client accidently jabbed the muzzle of his rifle into the mud at the edge of a swamp.
Again, when another client managed to get a projectile jammed in the rifling from a handload with bullet seated out too far.

I don't normally use it for general bore cleaning as it is a little too fiddley, but for those times where you need a compact go anywhere cleaning kit they are good.

Eric

I guess I agree with Alan on the fiddely part. I prefer a bore snake for field cleaning though. I carry a 5 piece take down rod for punching out obstructions.

The problem with boresnakes is that you have to have one at least close to the caliber you are using. You have to buy 3-4 to cover the bases.

I have carried one to Africa ever since they came out. In conjunction with "Sheath" wipes in individual packets they constitute my complete cleaning equipment . I also carry a Hoppes screwdriver with all the necessary bits in the handle. I have never needed more in 9 trips to Africa.

In Africa, I bring a bore snake....... and a cleaning rod just in case the bore will get obstructed. It never happens.

I wonder, is this Otis Kit reliable?

It looks almost fragile?????

JB,

I don't personally know if the Otis kit is reliable as I have not used it yet(I got one a couple of weeks ago from my cousin who imports them), but I do know that various military units use it, and the "rod" is a made from a wire cable that is covered in a plastic sheath. So the "rod" can't be broken.

The only thing is that the small brushes can obviously be lost, but then that goes for all brushes.
