Looking for Horneber or RWS 10.75x68 cases in the U.S.
      #300615 - 21/05/17 12:16 PM

Huntingtons hasn't had any for a very long time. Reimer Johannson has them, but I'd like to find some in the US. Johannson will be my last resort. Buffalo Arms is making cases from Belted mag, but I want the real McCoy. Betram cases are ridiculously expensive and are weak. Thanks

Matt

Can't help you with Horneber, Matt and I agree Bertram brass is pricey. However, I use Bertram brass in my 10.75x68 and a 375 Flanged Nitro Express 2 1/2 and weak they are not! I am pushing the
375 30% over the CIP pressure spec and the brass is looking fine. In the 10.75 I have brass that are on their 6 th reload and same. What I have found is the the flash hole in my 10.75 can be a little too small with the reprimer pin sticking. Fixed that problem with a small drill bit!

Snowflyer,

Yours is the first good word I've heard regarding Betram 10.75x68 brass. Was your brass recently produced?

Yours is the first positive word I've heard regarding betram 10.75x68 brass. Is your brass of recent production? Most reports suggest split necks on the second fireing.

I would be thrilled to find RWS, as well, or instead. Thanks
Matt

If you can only get Bertram brass anneal the necks before any reloading just in case - not hard to do.

Matt, the 10.75 brass came with the rifle when I bought it in 2012. I have no idea when they were manufactured. The 375 brass was bought new last year.

Snowflyer and 9.3x64mm:

Thanks for the advice! While I am still looking for Horneber and RWS, I was given a lead, on another forum, that netted me 55 pieces of new Betram cases for $108! I will see how 5 cases work for a few firings. I will then anneal the rest if the need arises, and anneal every few shots thereafter. I am still in the process of gathering components to build my rifle, but once it's done, I'll report back my results on brass life with the Betram, and hopefully, Horneber and RWS as well.

Awesome, Matt. I wish I was so lucky. Also keen to hear how they perform for you.

Ditto!
Good pick up, I would anneal all cases before first firing; once that is done you should be pretty right, but as these cases are hard to come by re-anneal when you think necessary.

Gentlemen,

a german conmpany named SHM is producing rare cartridge cases in metric and imperial calibers, also in 10,75x68.
I checked today the stock and price, 50 pcs in 10,75x68 are available and offered for 3,30 € each plus shipping.
Of course this is not cheap, but I tested 300 Weatherby and found these cases very good (better than Bertram cases I used in 350/400 Rigby and 11,2x72 Schueler).

If you need help I can offer support (I am not involved in this company or a relative to the owners)

best regards
Rolf

Like 93x64mm I would be annealing any hard to come by or expensive case before use. The problem is that there will be no prior warning before a case suffers a neck or shoulder split therefore you will lose valuable cases before you get the chance to anneal.

Annealing is so easy to do even using the simple method of standing cases in a pan of water, heat necks with a small gas torch and then tip over.

I lost a few of my valuable RWS 404 Jeffery cases due to neck splits after many firings before I got around to annealing. Haven't lost anymore since and now always anneal after a couple of firings. I still have some brand new but at least 30 year old RWS cases to use one day and I will definitely be annealing these before use just due to their age.

I have salvaged my split neck cases by soft silver soldering the splits while the case is held on a steel neck mandrel. I just file off the excess solder, anneal and then use these cases for cast bullet loading. The early Kynoch factory ammo I have suffers from the odd split neck or two on first firing so these also get the soldering treatment.

404 Jeffery brass is more readily available now but not cheap in my neck of the woods so I'm a bit of a scrooge when saving brass.

Never would have thought of soldering the necks, even for light cast loads?
I suppose if you anneal the cracked case first & resize etc next it could be done then with the base in water - would be a tricky job still.
Would only use it for a dummy round myself, but in a pinch it'll more than work!
Clever!

I use a length of 'dirty' (unpolished) steel rod clamped horizontally in a bench vise so the case is slipped over the rod and soldering (low temperature silfos) of the split is done on the 'flat'. The steel mandrel stops flow of silfos through to the inside of the neck and even if a small amount does flow through it won't stick to the unpolished rod. Aim the gas flame away from the case and the silfos runs just above normal annealing temperature with the mandrel acting as a heat sink too.
Slip the case back off into a container of water.

I solder and clean up first then anneal and size the case. So far I have got quite a few more cast loadings out of these cases without any further splitting. In so far as full steam loads the case bodies do not get any hotter than they would when annealing so the soldering process wouldn't be a killer in this respect but in deference to the fact that the cases necks have split after multiple loadings I would not usually use them for full steam loads. Normally good practice to keep cast load cases separate anyway.

Moral of the story though is that it is far better to anneal regularly from the get go with valuable cases to prevent case loss down the track
