Interesting rolling block rifle
      #300335 - 11/05/17 04:06 PM

This rifle was build by famous finnish gunmaker Joonas Matarainen from Jyväskylä. Action probably from old miltary Husqvarna. Caliber is 8mm (maybe original 8x58R ?). For sale in local gun auction.

I like it! Almost looks like it could be found in the American West. Grove underlever conversion and Gemmer style stocking.

Marvellous timber on this old girl - someone was lucky!
I thought though that rolling blocks never needed a lever as the 'block' gave access to the chamber?

Maybe it was modified to work like a Highwall, just roll instead of drop? Would be interesting to know, thats for sure!

The under lever conversion was done to give more leverage with poor quality sticky brass. Remember in the 1870s brass was still a new development.

My reproduction Cove conversion on an antique action.

Nicely done cordite. The added leverage would be considerable.
By 1880, I've read that most all civilians were using brass cases, however the military still issued copper cases as they were cheaper - and of course, prone to sticking.

Cordite - any chance of a video of it in action? (The action itself in action?) Thanks for sharing, looks great! How much work is there in that?

Well, I will try to post a short video. A gentleman named Jerry Sells made a number of these and I got this one fom him. My impression is that it takes some work to make it function correctly.
