Does anyone have information as to how many Oberndorf Magnum Mausers were made?

I think we would all be making an educated guess.
Im guessing , not as many as you might think. Out of around 126000 rifles and actions, and taking into account the English Trades uptake( accounting for most), and the factory production is various calibre's like 404 ( most probabley to Africa), 8x75, etc....I figure less than 2000, just my guess though..

Wanabebwana...that looks like a rebarrled / rebored Rigby????

It's a difficult figure to find. I just had a quick look in both of Speeds Centrefire Mauser books and an old 1980 Mauser book by Lester Womack and could not see any production totals except for some year by year breakdowns. An estimate could be buried in the text somewhere in Speeds books.

I have always heard around 7000 original Oberndorf magnums were made.

The pic of the Rigby was posted just to show the action I do not know if it was re-barreled. Looks original to me from other pics of the rifle.
I read that Rigby commissioned the magnum for the .350 Rigby and .416. I believe they had exclusive rights in England for some time. The .350 was introduced in 1908 a few years before the .416 (1911).
Magnum Mausers were made until WWII started (let's say 1939?) so that would be a 31yr run. Mauser offered the 10.75x73 (.404NE)with the magnum action as did Abbeser and Merkel and I am sure other contemporary rifle builders also had access to this such as Schuler and Gibbs(.505,1911).
After the war the French confiscated Mauser machinery and produced the Brevex 300 and 400 magnum Mauser action.

Anyone ever see an original Oberndorf sporter in 8 x 75? (I haven't). It surely must be the rarest of the calibers built on a magnum action, if not the rarest catalogued caliber period. If any were built in Type A they must be the rarest of those as well, although there are several references to .404 Jeffrey and .250-3000 being the rarest of the A's.

I think the stepped ring magnum was introduced in 1899 at Rigby's behest for their 400/350 rimmed cartridge. The 350 Magnum was a later development (perhaps 1908).
The 350 magnum I owned was on a normal magnum action with the full sized receiver ring as the 416s had. The magazine dimensions were different surely though. I don't recall seeing and 350Magnums with the stepped ring.

Tthe rimmed rifles were commonly rebored and chambered to 375 H&H rather than rebarreled. I'm sure that is the case with the one pictured if we are going by the ammo in the picture. Strange though as I am not certain that the 350 Magnum can be rechambered to the H&H case without a good amount of setback and the squared breech on that barrel looks totally normal to me.

The rifle in the photo was shared by Monsieur Dorleac quite some time ago and is owned by a Spanish client of his.

Ben, the recent gavin gardiner auction had a 350 Rigby with step ring. I know of another close by.

My own 350 however is like the one in the photo.

The slanted box on the 400/350 and the 303 is my kryptonite. Both are still eluding my custodianship.

At one time, I owned three slant box Rigby Magnum actions. Two had bolt faces and extractors for the rimmed 400/350 cartridge. One had a rimless bolt face and extractor and is now in my gun room as a restored .350 Rigby Magnum. The other two, together with an original slant box Rigby stock were unfortunately in the fire which enveloped Lon Paul's workshop several years ago, as he was preparing to restore one to the original 400/350 caliber and the other to .375 H&H Magnum. Whether the actions are salvageable has yet to be determined.

I have seen a few step ring 400/350s recently that have been spared the 375 treatment including the one at Gardiner's. The Rigbys went for real money at that auction though being clean guns with known ownership/history.
I agree on the step ring version. Finding an unalterd one in excellent condition is quite an accomplishment and surely a high watermark in bolt gun collecting.
I still think I made a mistake trading off my 350 instead of something else. Of course I could just buy it back at a premium...ouch!!

I have owned an 8x75 which came to me as an action only.
It was a double round top, and featured narrow , tappered bottom metal, making chamabering of another cartridge a real challenge.
One other 8x75 surfaced two years ago, it had been butchered , and I missed the opportunity. Yes very ,very rare.
I would be very surprised if as many as 7000 Magnums were produced, when I get a spare month Ill go through the archive!
Close to topping the rare catagory must be the short /intermediate sloping box.......Im lucky enough to have one.

Best
