* Apologies to the OP, I have gotten off topic. Of the cartridges listed, The 505 Gibbs has its impressive size, the 300 H&H is sexy as a super model, but the 375 H&H is the winner for popularity through the ages. Used in every corner of the world, it's name still carries credentials the 375 Ruger, Weatherby ect will never match.

I have never owned one, but I would love to have a 404 Jeffery. A bit bigger bullet than the 416, and without the stupid belt of the H&H cases. It can also be shoehorned into a less massive action, and handier rifle than the 505 Gibbs requires. Sounds about perfect to me.

The .303 is the cornerstone of any rifle battery! It's my "go-to" woods cartridge.

Of the ones featured by the OP, I'm a fan of the .375 H&H.

Now let's see. . .

Last count I have:
* four .303 doubles;
* one .303 single shot;
* two .375 H&H doubles; and
* two .375 H&H bolt rifles.

Yeah, I guess I'm a fanboy!

Itīs funny but this well-known caliber .303 British is virtually totally unknown here in Finland. I have never seen or heard that anybody here owns any rifle in that caliber.

I moved to QUEBEC from Alberta when I was a kid and started hunting with my cousins and uncles for moose every year. There where more 303 enfields in camp then everything else combined. Some sporterized some garage modified and a Mark4s as is.

There was always 8-12 of us in camp and the list of calibers over the years. There was some evolution over the years but by memory. There was a trend to "upgrade" from the 303 / 30-30 to the 7mm Rem mag.
6x 303
4x 7mm Rem mag
2x 30-30
1x 35 Rem
1x 270
1x 308
1x 300 Weatherby
1x 356 Winchester
1x 30-06

--------------------
450-400, 9.3x74r and 7x65r.

I am not surprised the .303 is rare in Finland. As it belonged to the British Empire and Commonwealth.

I am surprised it is still so used in Canada.

In Australia say around 50 years ago the .303, and the .25/303, .270/303, and other derivations, would have been pretty much universal. Today very very few people would use one.

My family are out of the country, farmers, teacher, loggers and such. No one ever sold there old 303 or 30-30 if they upgrade they kept the old rifle and it went to the next gen as a first rifle.

In the far north the 303 is still second only to the 22lr as a harvester of meat. Hell the Canadian rangers still get issued them although that is starting to change to 308s now.

.303 ammo outsells all others I am sure along with quite a number of guys with Lee Loader hand dies for it. The ammo is still quite inexpensive compared to about all other CF's.
180gr. WW Power Points seem about the best on moose, now that 215gr. Imperial/Dominion ammo is not loaded any more.

I own rifles in all five of the pictured calibers, but as far as hunting is concerned, the .300 H&H easily wins the competition if number of game animals brought down with it is the criterion. For an all-round caliber and the minimum caliber for dangerous game, I would certainly endorse the .375 H&H, but for elephant, rhino and buffalo, I'll take the .505. I have never killed a hippo, so I can['t comment on that, but I suspect the .505 would be my choice for it as well.

I grew up in an area where deer were first reintroduced about 50 years ago, so I have no boyhood hunting experiences like those of many of the other contributors to fall back on. I was in college before I fired my first center fire rifle.

Since then, things have radically changed. The county I grew up in and have now returned to ranked number three in deer "harvest" this year, down from its usual number one or two spot. The daily limit on deer during archery, muzzle loading and rifle seasons is three per day. Two eight point bucks, two six pointers and numerous does were harvested off my farm this past season, which I view as partial pay back for the damage the deer cause to my soybean crop.

I have never used any of the cartridges mentioned at the beginning of this thread on deer, except for the one very large buck I took with my .300 H&H some 35 years ago. Instead, I have used over twenty center fire cartridges, ranging from the .22-.250 Remington to the .400 Whelen, and my conclusion is that they will all kill cleanly if the shot is put in the right place.

I started writing a piece titled The 303, 404 & 505 ; The Palindrome Trifecta but couldnt get my editor interested even with photos of my Lee Speed, very early Jeffery and a friends original Gibbs.

But if forced to vote on just one it would be the 375 H&H

Good to see how many people shared my first thought reading Phil's comment. We'd love to host it here. Can't pay for it, but might be able to find a DVD or book as a return gift, if you'd like.

For some reason the editor of Rifle magazine never could fathom that there was enough interest in African calibers !?!

303 is very rarely seen in the U.K. Now as a hunting round. In Scotland min muzzle velocity of 2450 fps introduced 30 odd years meant an awful lot of 303s and 6.5x54 mannlichers were traded in for a Parker Hale 270 win. 300 H&H pretty much unheard off. There are a few 240 H&H still around, but not many. 7x57 / 275 Rigby is making by a bit of a comeback, but nowadays it's pretty much 243, 270 or 308.

Given our strict licencing most hunters will just have one centrefire rifle and one 22lr. - we have to justify each rifle and why we need it.

Rarely seen, but still used, a stag from twenty five years ago or so. I was a whisker from taking a fallow with it last night! These new fangled. 308 will never catch on!!
