Rigby Rifles Used in War
      #299126 - 16/04/17 04:58 PM

Some time ago I had the opportunity to go through the Rigby ledgers for the periods covering, 1914 - 1918 and 1940 - 1945.

Four rifles were sold to various departments of the British government during this time.

June 1916 .577 single falling block rifles, number 17163.

June 1916 .416 Rigby rifle number 4046.

February 1917 .256 Mannlicher 'Military Rifle' number 930.

May 1941 .275 Rigby rifle number 5684 action number 1172. This rifle ended up with SOE and had its stock shortened by Wilkes of Soho.

My question is does anyone have any of these rifles or seen them come up for auction. I would like to know if they received any official military inspection or proof marks.

Regards

Ive just finished reading a book called Gallipoli Sniper , the heavy sorting rifles were used by the troops to destroy the sniper loopholes in the Turkish trenches. Some sporting rifles were issued to the Australian snipers for assesment b but never really made the grade due to the shitfull conditions that were the general rule in the trenches.

There has been at least a couple of threads on NE over the years on the big bore rifles, double rifles etc issued to troops during WW1. As was mentioned on these threads , as above, one of the purposes was the idea these rifles could be used as anti-bunker rifles in the trenches. Will have to do a search and see if the threads can be re-discovered.

Yes I don't think even that extra thick plate the snipers used to clip onto those lugs on the front of their helmets would do to well against a 416 to the forehead!

That would be very nice of you. I remember reading somewhere that elephant rifles with solid bullets were used as anti-tank weapons, don't know if that's true or not, and guess the topic was covered in the threads.

Some threads so far. Still working through the pages.

WWI Sniper Rifle

That is a start searching 15 years using WW1 as the search criteria. 526 thread posts.

There is at least one other thread I remember but have not yet found I think.
