Sako Grizzly - Arctos

I like old guns. Don't think I have bought a new one in 15 years. But this Sako pushes all the right buttons for me. I'm seriously thinking of getting one, 9.3x62 or 338 federal. Anyone have one or looked at one up close?

Have not looked at one of these but have shot the Model 85 Kodiak in 375 H&H ..it shot very well and was very comfortable to shoot..AND for once the factory sights actually align for me..

I have a model 75 in 375 H&H..and is seriously one of the most gently shooting 375's I have ever shot..

If I had one complaint it would be the safety..way to small for a DG rifle...changing that out if possible would be a great idea for my purposes..

Weird barrel design with the stop-gap fluting, but still reather OK.
I think the little .338 Fed has a LOT going for it, for normal ranges & animals up to griz, however the 9.3x62 is quite a bit of a BIGGER package- of one thinks that is necessary.

I have a Sako 85 Black Bear in 9.3x62 that I took to Cameroon in December. Worked great and love it. I think it the same barreled action as the Argos. Recoil is very mild. It has an MPI express stock.

I also have a Sako 85 Grey Wolf in 338 Federal. I had it restocked by MPI and had a barrel band sling swivel and NECGS adjustable rear and ramp front sigh mounted. It shoots like a pussy cat. My brother took it to RSA and took kudu, impala, bushbuck and eland with it.

I really think the 338 federal is dead. Brass is impossible unless you can find factory loads. The 9.3x62 is medicine on antelope up to eland and available. My ammo did not arrive until 3 days after I did in Cameroon but the outfitter managed to scrounge a half box for me, zero chance of that with a 338 Federal.

I really like the Sako 85, I'm even having Kevin Weaver build me a 400 Whelen on a SS model 85.

I have handled one in store very nice, I enjoy my Kodiak quite a bit. I like with the 9.3x62 , pretty universal.

About that .338Fed. on this continent, I've always considered brass for the .243Win., .260Rem., 7mm/08, .308Win., .338 Fed. and .358 Win. to be VERY plentiful - not only cheap to buy, but mostly free as range pickup, especially after the local ERT (Emergency Response Team) has their qualifications.

I can see your point if the ammo does not accompany you to where you are hunting.

Me too! For me the fluting would be nicer as a straight run and the barrel band sweated onto the underside of the barrel only.

Nice rifle...but IMHO, for that kind of money $8,000 plus..personally feel there are other options out there better suited for DG hunting... I really like the SAKO's I have,,but, ???

IMO this not a DG rifle, you could buy it in calibers .375 H&H, .270 Win, 7x64 and .30-06 . If I need a DG rifle I would buy something else...

I looked at them at the SHOT show a few years back when they were first introduced and was impressed. the only issue I noticed was they were a bit on the heavy side. I tried to order the "black bear" model in 9.3x62 for a review in Rifle magazine but they had not yet been imported into the country.
I know one Alaskan guide, who is sometimes on this forum, who carried one in 375 and loves it.

I own 3 Sako's of various vintages and the one thing that bugs me about them is the skinny piece of rubber they try and pass off as a recoil pad. All three, the last one, a Model 85 in .375 H&H, had a Pachmyer decelerator installed. Scoping a Model 75 or 85 using quick detachable mounts gets pricey. In Canada, I paid over 450$ 5-6 years ago for a pair of 1 inch quick detachable mounts for my .375. My Model 85 in .375 works okay and feeds very well.
