My Bro just scored an English Sporting Rifle in 14 bore, for himself. Made by Joseph Lang circa 1848, in almost immaculate condition.
Rifle should be on it's way here now, can hardly wait to fondle and shoot her.

Daryl, your brother is one lucky man - wonderful piece of kit isn't it; & in absolute pristine condition for its age.
That massive Damascus barrel certain is a standout isn't it!
Bet she'll shoot good too, looks hardly shot?

That is indeed a nice find. Very lucky to find such a pristine specimen.

You have all said it but I must too!

That is a VERY nice rifle in good condition

Excellent engraving and note the nice twist steel in the barrel

As you are both muzzle loading aficionados its a win win

Looking forward to the range reports - 14 bore is a useful calibre

Tony

Absolutely it is indeed wonderful - few marks and pristine- actually no worse than mine and my rifle was built in 86. I am a bit rough on stuff, according to Taylor.

It will indeed be interesting to measure the rate of twist.

Many rifles of that period had really fast rates of twist - up to a turn in 36" even and not suitable at all for heavy loads with round balls at all.

They would shoot weak loads, reasonably well, though Forsyth called them wounding loads - as he talked about 1 1/2 to 2 dram loads.

I am hoping it will shoot at least 3 drams (82gr.), to make it a decent deer rifle - and probably handle a moose out to 100yards or so, but I would prefer a bit more sneeze to it.

I expect they (Taylor and 'is wife) will drive down to pick it up in Kelowna, B.C., rather than trust the mail service with it.

Sounds like the new gun is going to like conicals.

So, what did your brother do?
Walk into Lang's in 1850?
You guys have a time machine or something?

That is just a rumor with no concrete proof nor support data.

It's all conspiracy theory hogwash - nothing to see here - move along.

The balls run 4, down to 180 to the pound.

The .682", along with 2 slug moulds, the one I made and the factory 730gr. Lyman Minnie for the .69 rifled muskets are 4th from the left.

I actually doubt this rifle will see either conical.

The ball and flattened one on the far left, is a 4 bore pure lead ball - 1/4 pound + one recovered from the dirt and rock berm at 325yards from the firing line. It was shot from a 4 bore underhammer rifle Taylor built - 35 years ago, for a lad. Hmmmmmm, wonder if it is still around.

As Forsyth noted, there is no reason to unnecessarily 'shake' the stock. Afterall, it is over or at 160 years old.

I'm a jealous man. That is one lovely Lang. I hope Taylor has some great times hunting it. Just my kind of gun.

More photos of the engraving and of course, my old decapitated obese body holding her.
