Need Butt pad suggestions.
      #298866 - 11/04/17 09:12 AM

I just purchased a Chas Heyer of Nairobi retailed Model A in 9.3x62, its in great shape and is one of my dream guns, the only problem is, that it has an ugly ventilated butt pad on it.

I would like something more classical, what would you recommend for such a fine rifle?

Thank you gentlemen.

Ha Ha deal. I am not sure what is period correct or what it would have had originally but I would think one of the red solid rubber pads would look like it belonged there.

The Mauser Type A (if that is what you are referring to) has a small sized 'butt' and Pachmayr make a small red Old English Decelerator pad that will look good on the Type A. My Type A 404 came from Rhodesia with a brown ventilated pad, white line spacer and all, which I replaced with the said Pachmayr pad. Soaks up the recoil far better than the ventilated pad ever did.

Before - white line spacer removed

After - Pachmayr Old English Decelerator

The Pachmayr Old English recoil pads are excellent. They look great once they have been properly fitted to the stock. They are soft enough to be easy on the shoulder, but still grind well for a nice fit to your stock.

I prefer the black pad myself because it looks very clean and unobtrusive. Beware that the "Red" pads Pachmayr sells are not a true red. They are not as dark colored as the old Silvers or Winchester style pads and have an orange tint to my eyes. I wish Pachmayr would fix that color issue because I always liked the color of the old Silvers pads. The problem with the Silvers pads is they were hard as bricks and were no help at absorbing recoil. The Pachmayr is much softer and absorbs recoil significantly better. You will be very happy with one !

Why don't you make a leather pad? It can't be more classic than leather can it?
And you can make it in any color you want..

I did. It's easy..

One thing I noticed after fitting the Pachmayr pad to my Mauser as shown above was that the length of pull felt slightly shorter even though the thickness of pad was no different to the ventilated pad it replaced. This was ideal as the Type A has a quite long LOP and I was tempted to shorten the stock slightly before re-padding, my stock has a small chip at the butt so thought I would shorten enough to remove this too. Fortunately I didn't and the LOP with the Pachmayr feels just right for me. It certainly made for a pleasanter shooting rifle.

Re colour, I'm opposite to KWJohnston and think the Pachmayr has a pink tinge to the red in the flesh whereas Silvers is more orange to my eyes. I agree the Pachmayr would be hard to beat if looking for felt recoil reduction.

Eagle27 you are correct. The newer Silvers pads as sold by Galazan ect do have a brighter red/Orange tint color. However the older Silvers pads had a darker red color, like the Old style Winchester recoil pads. Not sure why the color change has occurred...

Silvers pads old and new both have one thing in common however, they are very hard ! A Pachmayr Old English is MUCH better for absorbing recoil

Looking at the red pachmayr pads again, they do have an pinkish hue. Guess I had gotten the colors mixed up. Either way a "True" dark red is hard to find in a new pad.

I have used the red Pachmayr pads a couple of times and like them. This is the latest, a Mark X .375 redone by American Hunting Rifles (picture is theirs):
