What is the quintessential American firearm?
      #29798 - 20/04/05 07:24 PM

Was thinking today about what is the quintessential American firearm.

Is it the Colt Six Shooter?

Or a 12-bore Coach gun?

The Henry repeater?

Or the more modern pre-64 Winchester model 70?

Comments opinions and backing reasoning welcome

John,

I would think:
45 Colt Peacemaker
Mod.1911 45ACP
Mod.94 Winchester
Parker Brothers, L.C.Smith, Fox shotguns

I agree with your list based on the America I know except I would put in a Remington pump for the shotgun. The quintessential Canadian firearm would be the Lee Enfield 303 followed by a Cooey .22

I agree with most of what ovis posted, especially after adding the 870. I would include the M70, also. Based on sales alone, I think it would be hard to dispute the Winchester 94 as the quintessential American long arm. Probably the 1911 Colt would be the handgun. Though the 1873 Colt SAA (Peacemaker) is uniquely American.

Let's not forget the M16 or AR15. The little black "evil" assault rifle is as American as mom's apple pie, as is the M1 and 14.

A lot of people make fun of the Winchester 94, but I don't think there is a better rifle for woodland/scrub/swamp deer hunting than the 94, especially chambered in the 30 WCF. Makes a nice little ranch rifle tucked in a scabbard for horse carry, too.

Here's a take:

1) Sharps 45-70 Carbine / Henry repeater (tie)
2) Colt SA
3) Winchester 1895 .405
4) Browning M-2 .50 BMG
5) Browning M-1911 / Hi-Power (tie)
6) A.H. Fox SxS 12 ga. FE grade
7) Parker A-1 Special 28 ga.
8) Thompson M-1
9) M-1 Garand (actually Canadian design, but commissioned by US military)
10) M-1 A
11)Remington 870
12)Stoner AR-15

Best guns ever: MAUSER 98 / AK-47 (tie)

Americans???

WINCHESTER MODEL 94: The great American lever-action, and the biggest-selling commercial sporting rifle in American history. Used to harvest more deer than any other single rifle; used extensively in the Mexican Revolution (1910-20), etc, etc, etc.......

WINCHESTER MODEL 70: The standard bolt-action commercial sporting rifle of the world. Even Mauser 98s get customized with pusedo Model 70 features.........

REMINGTON MODEL 870: The most popular and durable American sporting shotgun, the standard of police agencies, pheasant fields, and duck blinds throughout America.

COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY: Colt's 1872 Model "P" is the quinessential American handgun, the frontier tamer, and is recognized world-wide as the "cowboy six-shooter".

COLT 1911 in .45 ACP: The greatest military handgun in American history -- make that world history -- and a design that simply cannot be effectively improved upon. Everything that has succeeded it is essentially junk, and deserves a 'sloppy-second' award. I carry one everyday, and have it beside my bed every night. A trained man with a good 1911 is absolutely well-armed for any defensive purpose.

SMITH & WESSON MODEL 36: The J-frame "Chief's Special" is the most widely-used self-defense revolver in the U.S., and is the perfect choice for anyone who needs a really small, totally reliable, high-quality, simple-to-operate handgun for self-defense. Ideal for women, and ideal for non-gun people who want to keep things simple. Extreme high-quality for a comparatively low price.

Speaking of rifles only which caliber is the most popular in America? Is it the 30.30 or 30.06 or the .270 or any other? And amongst handguns,is the .45 the most popular or has it been replaced by the 9mm?

I don't have the actual sales figures (rifles, dies, factory ammo sold?), but would suspect the 30-06 to be the most popular and wouldn't be afraid to put money on it either. Even here in Alaska where some of the other chamberings make a little more sense, the '06 is the top of the heap based on a report from Alaska Department of Fish and Game. I would expect it to be the same in every state of the union as well.

From my uneducated and un-informed view point, when starting this thread I was thinking of:

- the Colt six-shooter;

- the Henry lever action;

- the 12 gauge double barrelled coach gun.

But my opinion may be formed by watching too many Westerns.

In more modern times, I would include the Colt .45 Gov't Auto and the pre-64 Winchester Model 70 as well. And the Winchester M94 lever action as well.

Unfortunately the Colt .45 Autos are lost to us in Australia now as gov't has decreed that such large calibre pistols are inherently evil.

The lever action seems to be uniquely an American rifle and not as much used elsewhere. Is that correct or not? I think that question is worth a new thread.

I suppose you could also add the Weatherby Mark V. Just doesn't get more "West Coast" or "Hollywood" than that. Though it seems many Aussies have latched onto the Weatherby as their own.

In todays America I'd say that this would be a 30-06/ 270 bolt action rifle. Remington 700, Ruger M77, Savage, M70 etc.

As for Shot guns, The Rem 870 would be the favorite of most (but not me). I like the Winchester pumps better.

As for quintessential American rifles from a histortical standpoint, I'd list these.

1. Pennsylvania Long rifle (flintlock)
2. Colt Peace Maker
3. Henry Lever Action Golden Boy
4. Lever action Marlin & Winchesters
5. Sprinfield Bolt Action
6. 1911 Govt 45
7. And the darling of pre WWII hunters......the Savage 99 Lever action.

IronBuck

Good to see the Savage 99 in your list. A 99 was my first deer rifle 45 years ago. I still have and use one on occasion. It was one of the most popular rifles in the US and still has a great following. It is by far the most accurate lever action ever designed in my opinion.

As said many times above, the Winchester 94 and Colt 45 Peacemaker are THE GUNS that define American firearms...or are at least the most recognizable as uniquely American.

It is the single action revolver. Choose any you like, percussion or cartridge models, whether Colts, old Remingtons, USFA, Ruger, North American (they may not make full sized ones any more), Abilene/Seville, etc.

The best of them all are made by Freedom Arms.

Richard.

Lever action rifle, Winchester, Marlin, Savage, Henry

Pump shotgun, WinchesterM-97, M-12, Remington 870, Mossberg

Single action revolver

Special mention to the Colt style 1911 .45acp

Have these types of guns been made in other parts of the world for use anywhere other than the US?

And what do you gents on other shores think of when you think of one of us Yanks going out for game, pursuing outlaws (terrorists?) or defending our castles?

In no particular order...

-1911A1 Gov't Model .45ACP
-1894 Winchester 30-30
-Remington 870
-Colt Single Action Army (Peacemaker)
-M1 Garand .30-06
-Smith and Wesson J frame (five shot .38), can't pick just one model! The Centennial and the Chief's Special are highlights
-AR-15 family

I asked this question at a family gathering to mostly non-shooters and the replys were as follows

Kentucky Long Rifle
Colt "six-shooter" I presume 1873 models
Winchester Lever, all models
".45 Colt Auto" 1911 model
"Tommygun" 1927 drum magazine model
Pump Action shotgun but they did not know make or model
M16
Remember these were responses from Australian non-shooters

I'd have to say that for the general public the 1873 Colt revolver and the lever action Winchester are the quintessential American Firearms. But for the current crop of big game hunters I'd say that the Winchester/Remington/Ruger bolt actions with a "7" printed on them somewhere have replaced the others. We have become a land of bolt gun hunters... in love with unnecessary Magnum loads, unnecessarily powerful scopes, and willing to pay enormous amounts of money for five-pound rifles.

500 Grains says:

"Ugliest American rifle: Savage 110 (followed by Rem 788)
Most accurate American rifle out of the box: Savage 110 (followed by Rem 788)"

LOL had a 788 in .308 that would give most varmint rifles a run for their money. Had to be an embarrasment to Remington that their cheapo rifle shot better than the 700.

The double barrelled shotgun was the gun that won the west!
Not the colt peacemaker which wasn't introduced until 1873 and was too expensive for the average homestesder!

As I remember, the 30.06 cartridge has the greatest sales followed by the 30.30 cartridge!!

My .222 is an ugly 788. One of the first models. Also very accurate.
