Final countdown begins
      #29726 - 19/04/05 11:06 AM

Well, the coundown for my trip to Namibia has begun. As of today, it's only 21 days until I walk into the belly of that uncomfortable beast known at the Airbus, and head for the land of hunting pleasure. I feel like a child, with Christmas rapidly approaching! Everything is packed and ready to go. Of course, between now and my departure date, I'll probably unpack, pack, and repack another dozen times.

Just as an aside, for those of you who live in the U.S., I got my meds for this trip at the local Wal-mart Pharmacy, and saved about 30% over what it would have cost me at Rite-Aid, or the other big pharmacy chains. I got 19 Malarone Tabs, 10 Ambien, 7 Cipro Capsules, 20 Doxycycline, and 20 Butabital (I get some killer headaches) for $68.00 with my prescription plan coverage. The list price on the Malarone alone was $96.00.

Enjoy the preparations.

I will be hunting in Namibia from 12 to 19 June. Instead of an Airbus I will be travelling about 16 hours in a vehicle.

I also feel like a little boy with Xmas to far away.

mike keep me up to speed on that trip we are going to the same general area/around Etosha I'll be just south of the park.
I'm really interested in your baggage/gun transfers. I am assuming you'll land in Windhoek via Jo'burg from ATL. I want to know if you actually can check your bags straight thru to Windhoek in ATL...if it works like it is suppose to. Also whom you choose to do the dipping and shipping.
ENJOY!

My travel agent, with my permission, hired Optima Services in Johannesburg. For $60.00 a person, they will meet us as we come off the plane, escort us through the airport to the departure area, collect our luggage and rifles from the plane, hand carry them to, and place them on the next flight, and give us a receipt for everything. They will do the same thing on our return from Windhoek. I think it's $60.00 well spent.

Mike, I'm planning on using Optima too. Having lost luggage on the way thru J.burg before, I think it'll be worth it.

Seven trips so far. It's been my experience that one has to try awfully hard to not have a wonderful time in Africa. One just needs to be flexible, and go with the flow. It is, after all, Africa.

Well, it's after midnight here. I waited until now just so another day could be ticked off my countdown sheet. Eighteen days to go, and counting.

Mike,

An experienced African hunter like you may be able to help me, and possibly many others, with a problem I have?

Whenever I really look forward to something, like a Okavango or Kalahari trip, I also count down the days. Usually from about 40 days, like in the Army! I even make a spreadsheet which automatically opens whenever I switch on my PC and display the days left. Wonderful this anticipation! And every day a number less on the display. Now we all know a day has 24 hours, yes? So every 24 hours my display drops one number. Like your counter did at midnight.

My problem is that at about 10 days or so, the number of hours in every day seems to start getting progressively more. By about 5 days left it seems to take about a week just to get past another day! Have you any explanation?

Then there is the other problem: Having waited so long for the last few days to pass, I get inclined to say about important tasks: "I'll do that later, there's plenty time for that!" And, yes you guessed it right, in the end there is this mad rush to get everything done in time! Then the time really flies! Hell, man I can't understand it, can you explain?

Enjoy the anticipation, and best of good luck wishes for the trip!

Andrew McLaren

Wow! I experience the exact same thing! Amazing! I honestly can't explain this phenomina. What I found from others who suffer from this is that when you get to the last stages of the countdown, when time stands still, is to lay in a 2 weeks supply of your favorite alchoholic beverage and consume it over a 6 day period. If you're lucky, you'll be in a complete drunken stupor and passed out most of the time. Then stop drinking the day before you leave, and consume mass quanties of heavily caffinated coffee. This will help the time seem to pass by much faster than if you were sober. Unfortuately, I have a genetic blood clotting disorder, and have to limit my alchohol intake because i have to take blood thinning meds. So I just have to suffer when time stands still. If anyone reading this has a cure, please pass it on so we may all benefit.

Hunting videos the longer you watch them the better.
Yes it gets you more exited but it also passes the time.

Also get a little notebook for your hunting diary setup:

Day 1: departing at airport 12:15 pm and so on then all you have to do is fill in the blanks but leave plenty space !

The only way to make the time go faster is line up a bunch of projects between now and then. Something like painting the house, cutting wood, not packing till the day before, etc... Line up enough of these projects that you can't possibly get them all done before you leave. Time will fly by as you frantically try to get things accomplished. Pretty soon, it will be time to get on the airplane and you still won't be packed!

I will not be silenced! My tickets arrived yesterday. Now I've got the shakes. Last night I only slept for 4 hours. I was dreaming about shooting a monster Kudu, and every time my .375 Ackley went off, I'd wake up, and couldn't get back to sleep again. Sixteen more days to go.

You've got 16 days and I've got 5 months. You sir, suck!

All kidding aside, I do hope you have a grand trip and take a 60" Kudu.

You have five months to wait for your trip? That's just too, too bad . I'm actually down to 15 days before I leave.

Seriously, good luck on your hunt. Where, and with whom will you be hunting?

I should have known that talking about my "big gun" going off would generate a comment like that. Shame on me.

I've heard only rave reviews about HHK. That should be a great hunt! After this trip, the animals at the top of my priority list are Sable, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, and Red Lechwe.
