Just watching my dogs working after dawn today.
      #296953 - 13/03/17 09:24 AM

Jumped on the bike for a dawn dog run this morn and I knew there were a few Stubble Quail on the hill near home but was pleasantly surprised when the dogs pointed a dozen individual birds.I spent 1/2 an hour on the hill just enjoying the early and best part of the day with mans best friend.I need to get back with my 'proper' camera next.

And the deer are wallowing a bit in that dam on the treeline.

I wish I could find some quail. Quite interested in doing it again.

I don`t shoot any birds over the dogs,I have done plenty of it previously but now with the area being a poor bird place compared to the cropping country I love to see them about and the dogs working them.

Here is a pair from a cam card pick up today from the bush edge.

I haven't seen quail near me for decades. But haven't ventured West or North onto more cereal farming country either to look for them. I used to see them in some paddocks/cereal stubble/grass paddocks decades ago here when hunting for rabbits or ducks. Before I had a GSP to find the downed birds with!

Have seen them in some deer country, but the landowner there doesn't like them being shot.

Some of the sheep properties we shoot foxes on might have some. Should ask.

And I know your dogs point what is in the photo above too. Which is a big plus.

Something about watching dogs working in a fall field that stirs the soul...

Thank you for the pics... only way it would have been better is if the dogs were German Wirehairs..

Gryph did it take a lot of training to get the dogs to where they can work the birds?

CD it has always amazed me that the dogs simply pointed the first birds they ever saw on the creek flats at the old place in mid Vic.They were never 'introduced' to them at all they just found them and as young pups I may add.
Once I encouraged them to look and find quail it was non stop.I shifted house a few years ago and the dogs hadn't seen a quail since but they have lost none of what they learned (like us and bike riding)
All I did was offer a few words of 'steady, steady' as the dogs moved in tighter if the birds moved.
Eager to please energetic dogs are a prerequisite, fat back yard dogs need not apply.
Its even better when a sambar is pointed and thats often right in the guts of a big blackberry bush when us mere humans have no idea that there is a deer within cooee.

450 miles South of here, in the wine district, is where you will find the quail in B.C.

The ones we have are either Gambles Quail or California Quail.

Thanks gryph. I Think I need to partake in some gentlemanly pursuits these days and I see plenty of quail in my wanderings. Normally as they are flying away. Have been thinking of getting a couple of pointer pups.
