my principal had a sounder of 17 boars before him last week and he was trying for an hour to get his modern mauser safety working again. also forget the knife in the car he try to repair it with his finger's. must have been to ripe out the hair fumble on the damned safety while the boar's had a good time in front of him.
know the wing safety is old style and outdated but would you believe this would make problems like this.

To what kind of safety do you refer ("modern Mauser safety") ?

don't care about them, some kind of safety that is not the original wing safety
they are all equally bad

if you reach the point of perfection and try to change something there it became worse again

I use model seventy side swing safeties on all my center fire rifles, I love them and have never ever had a problem, I wouldn't use anything else if that choice is available. They are fast when you need them and can be slow and quiet when you need them to be.

I've never had a problem with any safeties except for the following. -

A SMLE .303, where dropping the rifle on the butt would fire it.

A Mauser 98 with original military bolt shroud safety. The safety has never been able to be twisted over. Metal fitting, needs something machined off. Impossible to turn and never has been.

Mauser 98/Mauser 96 - original bolt shroud safety. Can't be used with a scope.

Even though I first disliked the idea of the Mauser M03 safety/decocker. I like it now. It isn't hard to use. And carrying a decocked rifle over a loaded chamber is useful.

Lots of rifle with a safety on with fire if you bump it on the butt.

I remember one author of a magazine article claimed the shotgun style tang safety was the best of all safeties. Even on his custom M98 in .375.

This would be good alternative if you use scope and like safety which works like original one. One quy in germany makes better version than those who you see for sale in ebay:

There are only two kinds of safety which I have had trouble with, the Greener (almost impossible to use with gloved hands) and the BRNO, which works the opposite from any other safety. As long as the safety is engaged when pushed to the rear and disengaged when pushed forward, then I can use it. With a bolt action, it has to lock the cocking piece, not the trigger.

It is a plus, if there are three positions, so the rifle can be loaded-unloaded with the safety engaged.

Sure like the tang safety on my Ruger M77 International.

I like BRNO or CZ safeties as well.

Side safeties as on newer M77's, Model 70's are also just fine. Takes only seconds to get used to whatever I happen to be packing.

If I'm not mistaken, that's a copy of the safety used on World War II German "bcd" sniper rifles.

I agree, and I also dislike the back to front BRNO safety.

Please, we all know the Certus has the greatest safety on any rifle!

Just kidding, just kidding.

I've had issues with a mannlicher schoenauer safety (being able to over rotate and not fire?). It's fixed now.

Xausa, you are right. Itīs still very usefull model but doesnīt look so nice in itīs original outfit. I have seen some fotos where people have converted it to more slimmer version and then it could look very nice.

Igorrock,

I would be glad to use on in its present shape on one of my hunting rifles, but I really wish someone would come out with a version which fits a Mannlicher Schoenauer. I just don't like the trigger safeties of the later models and the original wing safeties can't be used with a low mounted scope.

My 404 is the same. If I put some down pressure on the cocking piece I find I can engage the safety and it comes off safe easily. I would need to file a small bit off the groove but it doesn't bother me.

I am not very convinced of that concept.
The main reason I dislike it is that I want to avoid any elongation of the bolt.
Rapid cycling the bolt on the shoulder may (under certain conditions) cause ramming the safety lever into your eye.
And half of an inch longer can make the difference.

I think that would look extremely gross hanging off the bolt shroud ...
