LOP General Rule.
      #29529 - 15/04/05 12:48 AM

What is the gnneral rule of LOP for a double rifle?

My bolt rifles are ordered with a 14.75" LOP, usually HS Preccision after market stocks for model 70's and model 700's.

My shot guns are set up with 16.25" LOP.

What would be my (guess) LOP of a double rifle? My only double rifle todate is a german 8mm. I have a leather slip on pad on it and it's still way to short.

Before I order one I'll get fitted properly, but I'm just curious. The other thing, are there any vintage doubles out there that will fit me? I usually see a LOP on a double of between 14-15".

rell,

It seems srange to have a LOP of 14.75" for Rifles and 16.25" for Shotguns.

That's 1.5" difference.

What would be my (guess) LOP of a double rifle?
LOP is only 1 factor in the gun fitting. Cast, Drop etc also affects the items.

" The other thing, are there any vintage doubles out there that will fit me?".
Probably plenty ib 14 - 15" but when buying a Vintage double, may I suggest worry more
about the Metal work (ie Condition of barrels, action etc) than the wood as the wood can
be easily changed, th metal work can't.

Also, you can purchase stock comb raisers, stock extension kits made of Neoprene and Rubber
which have Multiple foam spacers of different sizes and they can be used to make any gun fit you.
I use them on 2 - 3 guns.

Hope this helps.

There is no "rule" everyone is differnt.
You want a double to fit like a shotgun.
Easy to mount, head errect, solid on the
sholder,and alinged with your eye.
Seek a profossional fitter and may I
advise you to find one who can implement
the changes. If you dont know one ask at
local shotgun clubs. Most shotgun fitters
fit more guns in a year than others will
for many years.

Depends on how long your arms are, how long your neck is and the contour of your sholders, and how fat your face it...No rule of thumb...

But the main thing is when you throw the gun to your shoulder with your eyes shut and open them that your looking right at your sights...

14.75 tells me your close to 7 ft. tall...I am 6-2 and long and almost lean and I shoot a 14" pull on a double rifle...Mainly you want to slightly crawl the stock and when you shoot the stock needs to be long enough to keep your thumb out of your nose..any longer and the butt will hang on your clothing when you bring the gun up...

Best way to figure out what you need is try some guns and when you find one that just feels like it belongs to you, then take those measurements...or use a try gun to get your specs....

The human body can about adjust to any gun if the shooter uses it enough, especially a shotgun...

My shotgun length of pull is 15-3/16", but my rifle length (on bolts) of pull is arround 14.5 to 15"" I find LOP is more critical on shotguns is more critical than rifles (DGRs excepted). You can time with rifles to "mount up" and settle in, so I have a little more leeway. With a shotgun (at least the way I shoot) it simply must shot where I am pointing trying to adjust myself to the gun really ruins the shot. I will add that I'm about 6-1" and I had my shotgun fitting with a very reputable fitter. The question I've always had is where double rifles fit in...

Just some thoughts from a far from great shot.

Ray,

I'm 6'3'' and Butch seemed to think that I needed 15 5/8 on my 500NE Searcy. That way my thumb (sometimes) just touches my nose on recoil.

Question: Was Butch (gasp) wrong?

I measured my double at 14 3/4 ,bolt
rifle 13 7/8 and shotguns 14 1/4.
All fit by the same fitter. All mount
quickly and to the same spot every
time. The double is a reach for the
front trigger ;but that puts my finger
on the second trigger after recoil.
I am 5'10" and 195 lbs.. The lop is
just one of the components of a good
fit on a gun. Cast, height, pitch all
must come into the picture for a great
fit.

I'm 6,4" and around 230lbs. I was a proffesional boxer and did quite alot of mixed martial arts turnaments. I guess my questionwas answered pretty well. Longer then a bolt rifle, shorter then a shotgun, that seems about the rule of thumb.

This is intriguing. The lenght of pulls for many of the posters it seems to me is quite long. I agree with the idea that if your eyes are closed as you shoulder the piece, the sights should be aligned and on target when you open them. My own rifle stocks are only 13.5" and I'm 6'3" and 240, but I carry alot of weight in my shoulders. When I do shoot with a longer stock I am concerned with the butt catching loose or bulky clothing. This could be a real problem on a "serious" rifle. I suppose if you train yourself to push the rifle straight out, as one would a shotgun, then pull it back into your shoulder this danger is eliminated, but for me that is too many motions when you are in a hurry. My eyes are fixed on the target, and the rifle comes straight up until the butt hits my shoulder and the sights align.

Glad this topic opened up. I always thought that a rifle should be fitted just as carefully as a shotgun. Weither it should be to the same specifications as a shotgun I don't know. I spoke to a Westley Richards rep. at Safari Club
and he said that about all they measured for a double rifle was length of pull.
It just seems to me that if I was shooting at a 50 yard moving Zebra and had no time for shooting sticks 'cause the PH just threw them at me and said "Do the best you can" that I would want a double rifle to fit so that when the rifle was at my shoulder the sights were on the target.

WR

Who told you that?

I have had 3 rifles built for me and 5 others restocked by name makers and they always checked lop, castoff and comb height. Always using a try stock.
