.303
.375 H&H
.300 H&H
.350 Rigby
.500 Jeffery

I would certainly put the 303 in place of the 300H&H
If you consider all of the Enfields and commercial 303 sporters, I bet it has taken more game than any other British cartridge.

Ripp, no offense taken. I do like the .400 H&H but I like the .375 2-1/2" NE even more. I loaded and shot a good bit of that old cartridge last year.

I suspect the ever so 'umble' .303 has taken far more game than all of the other cartridges combined.

yes probably so as it born around 1888 with the 300H+H born around 1925.
It certainly doesn't make it a better game cartridge.
I would put the .275 Rigby in there before it.Its a Pom coz they changed the name.

Yep I have often thought that would be a cool trio.

One the same theme: .222; .333; .444; but no .555.

There is also a .204 but no .202.

Not sure of the winning criteria ... but there are only two clear winners, the .303 British and the .375 H&H Magnum. Lots of other nice choices though.

Who invented the .22 RF?

Whats all this .303 love?

Who actually chooses it over all of their other rifles for when they go out after deer whether that be Wap,Reds,Sambar,WT,Muleys?

Ironically, growing up on a farm in N Dakota, we did not have a lot of extra walking around money. We didn't have indoor plumbing till I was 8 years old..

My first centerfire rifle was a .303 Enfield..still have it to this day..open sights..never scoped it..and literally shot dozens and dozens of whitetail with that rifle back in the day of party hunting...cost me $40 at the time..was my uncle's who is now deceased...plan to give it to my youngest son one day as his first centerfire as well..and yes, periodically I do take it out for a walk....really pisses the other rifles off..

Like you I too think the 400H&H is a cool idea...I like the unusual..or new or old..

Doesn't matter to me and each to their own..but personally don't care if one is faster, slower, better SD or BC...if its what I like I get it when available..I read the article in AMERICAN RIFLEMAN last month on the 400H&H..found it really interesting..

Dakota will probably not sell a ton of these..BUT, to those that do I am certain the cartridge will perform perfectly...not better, probably not worse..it will just work.. as is often said..Dead is dead...

Purely from the standpoint of the beauty of the cartridges I vote for the .375 H&H and the .505 Gibbs in that order. I've admired the looks of the .375 since I was about 12 yrs old. The .350 Rigby magnum and .400/350 run it a close race in the looks department.

I picked the .303 and .375 merely on the basis of actual use over the last hundred or so years and that they are British. British being a criteria of the comment.

Non British, obviously the .30-06 would be up there at the top.

I've only got two .303's both Mk1 No.III SMLE's. One full wood, still with matching numbers. Mainly purchased this for heritage reasons. Would be cool to have it displayed hanging on a wall. Nowadays not possible until I one day build a man cave walk in underground bunker where it and others can hang on a wall.

The other is a cut down version. For rough use. Also an original Light Horse scabbard. In case I need to ride a horse one day ...

One day I think it would be nice to have a nice classic sporting .303 and use it for hunting. Maybe a Lee Speed or a double in .303.

.303 is the most popular hunting round here - what's amazing, is how many people handload for their Enfields.

Since I have three belted 375Mag magazine rifles and one flanged 375Mag double rifle i would choose the 404J.

Had a nice takedown English magazine 404J 30yrs ago. Have a barrel and some of the makings in the safe. Just haven't got there yet! May be cheaper just to buy one. Mmmm, and I have an action for a 505Gibbs sitting with a friend in the USA.

Would be the 375 H&H. The only round whose popularity has never really fluctuated throughout its existence and has never been superseded successfully by a newer more modern round. Now I use a 404 and a 303 fairly regularly but as far as being the winner the 375 gets it hands down.

505 was a beast of a cartridge in physical size. My favourite brit cartridge though is the .425 WR! Is a dream gun of mine. I think it was Huvius who sold one exactly how i want.. 28" barrel, extended magazine.

As for the above.. .300 has that sexy slope, .375 has that nice taper.. Never been a fan of hte Rigby's shape, .404 is again a nice shape.. I'll lock in .375.

Of the cartridges presented, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H 404J in that order.

I still hunt with my Jungle Carbine and Ruger No1 in 303. Still a damned good round.

The 275 Rigby has a mystique all its own. Lots of history associated with that cartridge. Not quite as physically impressive as the big bores, but a killer none the less. Perhaps it being a 7x57 Mauser with another name keeps it from being a purebred British round.

The 318 Westley Richards and 333 Jeffery are both classic British rounds. I wish they were more popular. However they have fallen into history. Not because they are inferior rounds, but because cartridges in between .30 and .375 caliber have never been as popular as they deserved. That along with the arrival of the .338 Winchester Magnum.
