Used 458 Win Mag, for Cameroon forset hunt?
      #296175 - 03/03/17 11:42 PM

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/624522340

I'm thinking about this used custom Mauser in 458 Win mag for my 2018 hunt in Cameroon for Bongo / Sitatunga / and Forest elephant.

Guns get stolen there all the time so I don't want to bring a $15,000 custom or a double.

LOP is 14.5, Weight is 12lbs, Length of barrel is 22 inches, Military action Deutsche Waffen-UND Munitions Fabriken Berlin.

Also ammo does not show up quite often, and I know 458 Win is available.

Any thoughts to share on the possible purchase?

Looks chunky/short. I'd say thats a win for a forest hunt. Aint know flies on the .458 Win mag either. Heck, it'd be a safari classic by now, wouldnt it? Recoil would be relatively low at 12lbs, but it's also a on the very heavy side?

FOR ME,, I would not get a .458 for that hunt..

I am sticking to .375H&H or similar for that hunt..elephants there are on the smallish side NO???

also if there was a longish shot at something..feel the .458 doesn't have much for distance..granted there may never be anything over 100 yards anyway..but I plan to take a lighter rifle both in weight and recoil... but that is just me...

Can never have too many guns..

Custom drop box mag should hold at least four down. Pictures are poor but metal looks to be well done. Hard to believe that it could be that heavy without added weight, too heavy for me. Make certain you can return the rifle before you buy and it won't cost much for a better look.

definitely a work rifle.
Sure its a bit on the heavy side, must have had some weight added to the stock.
If you can trim the weigh down a little then this is what you're after!

Alternatively buy a rifle currently available and suitable for your purposes and which can be replaced. Insure it. If lost, replace.

I would probably use my Mauser M03 Extreme in a suitable calibre, probably .375 H&H for such a place. I believe they are available now in .458.

Insured, if lost, can be replaced off the shelf. Well in Aust, a wait of many months for the order to come through.

BTW Dig out an older copy of Hatari Magazine. Who knows, it might even be in the Nickudu files.

Harold Wolf did an article where he made a specialist Central African Jungle rifle.

It was a Mauser 98 with a full wood stock. And in .458 Win Mag.

There you are!

Unless that rifle balances and swings like a good double I would avoid it. 12ld is heavy and you will soon tire of lugging that around in thick bush. May I suggest, if you purchase the rifle, that you loose at least 2lb from it,some of that would come in shortening the barrel by 2". I have not hunted Cameroon but I do know a bit about lugging rifles through thick/dense bush. At the end of the day if the rifle keeps snagging even a 6lb you feel like throwing away.

Was looking around the other day for a good inexpensive gun to take to Alaska for the wet weather and found a Ruger Guide gun in .416 Ruger..think that would possibly make a good choice as well...light weight, flat enough for those 100 yard shots or less..mostly less...and plenty of KO power for anything you will meet..and is controlled round feed...can get a sythetic stock for them or laminate..

Also like John suggested, insure it. If it goes missing you get a new one..

I am leaning towards getting the Kimber Talkeetna in .375H&H...looked at one last week..controlled round feed, stainless, synthetic..should be good in wet weather...I will have it coated to reduce the stainless shine...and also protects the metal..did the same on my Sako 75..worked fine...

This 458 is just heavy it's out. Thanks all for the help deciding.

The Kimber is interesting I agree, in 375 it might get the nod.

The 416 Ruger is a no go for me because of ammo availability in Africa.

I am having Joe Smithson build me a 8lbs 375 H&H on a small ring GMA action. 22 inch SS barrel with machined sling swivel, rear sight base and front sight base. It will be cere coated in his custom carbon fiber stock. His QR rings holding a 1-8x24 Z8i Swaro scope. Because of the caliber this might get the taken and I'll just insure it.

I'm having Kevin Weaver build me a 400 Whelen (Whelen/Petrov) on an SS Sako 85 action. 21 inch SS match barrel with fixed v rear, banded front and banded barrel band. It will be in a McMillan hunters edge light stock and sent to Robar for NP3 finish on all internal and external parts. I have a Leupold VX6 1-6x24i in Talley QR rings and bases for it. No ammo in Africa but I started this as the perfect rain forest rifle. Short, light, weatherproof and the ballistics of the 400gr 450-400 load.

The last option might just be to use the camp Winchester 70 in 375, then I don't have to deal with guns and ammo. This is tempting but I really like hunting with my stuff.

I know these are first world problems but I'd like ans ah ha moment.

Buddy Keith is going to South Africa on a hunt in Sept, I think. He is taking his .375 Ruger and was told ammo, ie: Hornady DGS and DGX was quite available.

Unfortunately South Africa is an entire different world than Cameroon in my experiences...and YES., I agree, pretty sure ammo mentioned above could be found in South

My PH in Cameroon told me what a pain in the butt it was obtaining ammo there..

Kinda agree with Rell, would be way simplier to just go ahead and use the camp gun and ammo..

I have a Blaser R8 in 300Win and 375H&H, would make a great gun for this trip as well but not sure what would happen to the rifle if its raining steady for 2 weeks..but on the other hand also think what did I buy it for?? And in a case that small would really make it easy for them to steal...

Read a lot about the finish this company puts out..FYI..
